DataMatrix:
A new dimension in Glass Marking
Bar code labelling for product traceability in the factory is all very
well, but what happens years later when the windows are installed in the
customers house, a fault develops, and the paperwork cant
be found?
A new 2 dimensional marking format that can be etched onto glass or laser
printed onto PVC-U profile could well be the answer. DataMatrix marking
provides a complete record of any product for permanent fault identification.
Other
than being permanent, the main advantage of a 2 dimensional binary code
is that it takes up hardly any space, and is therefore virtually unnoticeable
on the sealed unit or window frame. With the ability to include up to
2,000 characters in a space as tiny as 1mm square, it now means that even
the smallest component of any window can be successfully marked.
However, mass storage in a tiny space is not its only feature. The robust
nature of the DataMatrix code means that it can accept as much as 20 per
cent damage to the information it carries, yet still return a 100 per
cent read rate.
DataMatrix marking has been launched into the UK by leading data management
specialists Data Dialogue who also provide a full consultancy and evaluation
service, the necessary software, marking systems and the image readers
required for total product control and traceability.

NEW
ELUMATEC DIVISION FOR DATA TRANSFER
Despite the utilisation of increasingly complex software programmes, most
fabricators' systems are unable to read CAD-generated design and construction
data utilised throughout the building industry, in order to convert the
data for production purposes. At present, data usually has to be re-calculated
manually by skilled production engineers who also require a working knowledge
of the computer aided design systems used in construction.
In recognition of the problem, machinery manufacturer Elumatec has formed
elusoft®, a specialist division dedicated to the development of programmes
that provide an interface between construction CAD-produced drawings and
calculations, and glazing production systems.
elusoft® engineers have focused on the development of software that
optimises the conversion of data between CAD and CNC systems. For example,
systems have been developed that will enable the automatic generation
of production data from complex construction drawings, also producing
detailed graphics of profiles and glazing systems. From original CAD data
elusoft® systems can calculate such specific production data as machine
settings, feeder speeds, drilling depths, tool selection, optimum fixing
methods and other production parameters.
By using elusoft® systems to generate detailed graphics of components
used in the production of window and door systems, production staff may
programme production systems without any knowledge of CAD systems. A key
element of the elusoft® approach is for its products to be operated
without specialist programming skills.
elusoft® claims that its programmes greatly reduce processing - and
therefore production - times, with even special projects produced with
relative ease. Errors are substantially reduced by safety routines incorporated
in the programmes. elusoft® systems are designed to anticipate future
development in design and production systems.
Elumatec UK's Phil Heavey believes the division will have a significant
impact in the UK: 'Many of our customers are heavily involved in the construction
market and re-programming their clients' drawings has been a major burden.
elusoft® promises to literally revolutionise what has been a major
chore, and to substantially speed up the process, whilst also improving
accuracy and therefore reducing costs.'
Edstrom
passes Crash Test
Edstrom's racking, shelving and roof mounted systems have achieved excellent
results in a recent vehicle crash simulation, proving that for safety
as well as versatility the company is hard to beat.
Tests at independent vehicle test and development facility Millbrook in
Bedfordshire were carried out on a new van fitted with Edstrom vehicle
racking systems including shelving, drawers, roof rails and accessories.
Bulkhead safety partitions were also put through their paces.
Currently
there is no defined test for internal fittings of the type Edstrom needed.
But undeterred the company sought extensive advice before opting for a
recognised EC test method that simulates severe impact. The test piece,
in this case the van and its fittings, was subjected to a test impact
curve peaking rapidly to a punishing 20 G-force. The resultant 'pulse'
is equivalent to a head-on impact with a solid stationary object or two
vehicles crashing at 30 mph. The vehicle racking system and roof rack
were loaded with fixed weights to simulate the payload.
It is believed that this is the first time a manufacturer of racking and
LCV accessories has subjected its products to this most severe of test
methods.
Millbrook engineers confirm, 'The test was performed using an acceleration
pulse that conformed to the displacement of luggage test for ECE R17.07.
The internal racking system and mobile workshop plus roof rack and associated
accessories were successfully retained.'
The Edstrom products proved their structural integrity with little evidence
of failure. The system was intact and remained fixed to original mountings
on the floor, walls and gutters of the van. The drawers did not lose their
contents. Most importantly, nothing encroached into the driver's cab area.
The test was witnessed by representatives from the Vehicle Certification
Agency (VCA); the UKs national approval authority for new road vehicles,
agricultural tractors and off-road vehicles; a leading motor manufacturer
and the full Millbrook test laboratory staff.
The successful crash test was one of many in an ongoing series to ensure
the Edstrom range meets current and future safety and stability standards.
Such a testing and development programme is being used so future legislation
and the requirements of customers are met in full.
Edstrom is a manufacturer of racking, shelving, workshop equipment, storage
systems and accessories for service orientated vehicles in the light commercial
sector. All Edstrom racking products are TUV quality approved and supplied
through a worldwide network of companies.

PLAS GOES NATIONAL WITH VEKA PATIO
VEKA specialist fabricator Machine Plas has launched its express delivery
service to supply the nation with the popular VEKA Matrix In-Line Patio
Door.
Available unglazed in complete or kit form, demand for the doors has been
excellent since ex VEKA man Milton Berry started Machine Plas, in a classic
reversal of the 'poacher-turned-gamekeeper' maxim just two and a half
years ago. After establishing Machine Plas by prepping VEKA building and
glazing profiles for specialist applications, Milton has added the patio
doors to take advantage of a boom in demand for the product.

The VEKA In-Line Patio Doors owes much of its popularity in the market
by offering a high level of security involving a four point locking system
and secure interlock and anti-lift device, whilst being internally glazed
for further protection. The door is available as a right, left or double
opening and has a high performance roller track for smooth action and
years of trouble-free use.
Milton Berry commented: 'We have had an excellent response to the new
VEKA Matrix sliding patio door line and the orders are coming in thick
and fast. With VEKA's exceptional service and support, even to small companies
like mine, we are able to complete orders very quickly. It did help having
inside knowledge of VEKA of course as I already knew how good the product
was before I took on the Matrix Patio Door!'

Polycarbonate
- Beyond Conservatory Roofing
by Assaf Shahar, md Polygal UK Ltd
Mention
polycarbonate sheet, and most people would immediately think of conservatories.
And this is perhaps as it should be. Polycarbonate, due to its inherent
light weight combined with almost unbreakable strength, ready availability,
and relatively low cost, remains for many the natural first choice when
it comes to conservatory roofing.
However, polycarbonate can also possess many added value features which
stem from the application of advanced technology and the latest manufacturing
processes to provide required characteristics such as energy saving, or
impact safety, and which take it far beyond the first and most obvious
use as a roofing material.
But even in this application, polycarbonate has evolved well beyond merely
adding a coloured tint to try to reduce overheating. As we know, conservatories
can be expensive places to cool when exposed to day-long sunlight, but
the newest polycarbonate sheet, Primalite, literally separates the heat
from the light by selectively reflecting back over 65 per cent of infra
red from the sun's rays. The energy savings compared to standard transparent
sheet can be as much as 51 per cent, or 36 per cent compared to opal tinted
sheet. If this alone doesn't convince a potential customer to specify
Primalite, the fact that it also entirely blocks ultra violet, meaning
no more sun-faded furnishings, often does!
Polygal
was the first manufacturer in the world to produce multiwall, or structured
polycarbonate panels, primarily for building insulation purposes, but
yet again the technology has developed, to the point where in our Selectogal
sheet for example, part of the internal structure is formed into prisms.
Whilst this internal modification may not appear to be very much on the
outside, it does allow most of the sunís heat to be reflected back
in the hot days of summer leaving a cooler, more comfortable interior.
The prismatic action however, does enable increased light and heat penetration
during the winter months, when what little sun there is appears at a much
lower angle in the sky. Selectogal thus offers significant year-round
energy saving benefits.
The sheer versatility of polycarbonate sheet, two hundred times stronger
than glass, yet only a fraction of its weight, means that it also has
many applications other than for conservatory roofing, fulfilling both
a practical, as well as an aesthetic role in shopping centres, covered
walkways, trolley and car parking areas, for example.
Being so much lighter than glass, polycarbonate usually requires substantially
less structural support, making large area glazing designs more readily
achievable. A prime example is Moscow's new football stadium, where polycarbonate
sheet has been specified to provide a virtually obstruction-free shelter
in the stands.
Where heavy load capabilities are required, the new increased strength
Titan 16mm 'X' structured sheet not only has the same weight as standard
polycarbonate but its 2100mm width also allows a more extensive span,
thus saving on glazing time and materials. UV protection on both sides
is now also available in 850, 980 and 1200mm widths.
