Veka's In Line Patio Door Opens More Opportunities

Veka plc has announced further improvements to its In Line Patio Door to provide easier fitting for installers and a more robust product to satisfy the most demanding customer.

The In Line Patio Door was introduced by Veka last year and since then it has been progressively developed, including the addition of a stainless steel track to offer smoother operation and greater durability. With robustness in mind, Veka has also introduced the option of choosing a tough aluminium kick plate for a threshold that can handle high traffic but which blends into its surround in a white paint finish. Customers can also choose from a variety of opening/fixed door combinations of 2, 3 or 4 panels.

Another enhancement to the patio door is the new low threshold to comply with Building Regulations, which state a dwelling must provide a low threshold through the main access. The new threshold is robust and comes with a severe weather rating whilst also providing disabled access.

To assist the installer, Veka's in line patio door can be manufactured from bar length sections and the outer frame can easily be assembled on site.

GTI-Kombimatec Pledges 'The Ultimate Bead Station'

With bead milling still a time-consuming and awkward task for many window fabricators, GTI-Kombimatec has introduced a number of solutions that aim to cut down on bead preparation time whilst also producing more accurate end results.

Highly suitable for low to medium volume fabricators, the GLS180 Automatic Mitre Saw is an excellent partner to the versatile GL180 220 Digital Measuring System (inset right)

Hailed by the company as the ultimate bead station, the GL181 CNC Bead Saw and GL180 220 Digital Measuring System make for a powerful combination. A variable angle, fully automatic bead saw, the GL181 is fast, flexible and precise. Supplied with 10 CNC programs, all of which can be used for sequential cutting, a cycle cuts one bead and prepares the next simultaneously, with each cutting cycle taking just 4 - 6 seconds to complete. Blade rotation speed can be controlled by a transistor invertor to increase the pace still further.

Capable of variable angles from 60° left to 60° right and all angles in between, the GL181 also offers accurate angle positioning to 0.1°, producing superior end results.

Using electronic digital positioning, the GL180 220 complements the GL181, matching its speed and accuracy exactly. Supplied with a plug-in memory cassette that can store up to 250 different measurements, the GL181 220 allows the operator to upload precise instructions using two lightweight digital measuring wands. Measurements are then downloaded from the cassette into the controller or may be input manually using a keypad. For extreme precision, 99 correction values can be called up and displayed on screen, and the operator may choose whether the companion machine cuts all heights/widths using odds and evens position numbers or cuts in sequence.

This versatile digital measuring system also complements a number of other Kombimatec solutions for bead preparation. Highly suitable for low to medium volume fabricators, the GLS180 Automatic Mitre Saw offers two milling blades set at 45° and two TCT saw blades, enabling the operator to prepare two beads at once. A 2 metre detachable measuring stick provides a convenient method of transferring glass bead sizes to the saw, and special adjustable blocks are supplied to accommodate different profiles.

Small to medium fabricators looking for a manual bead solution that is capable of variable angle cutting should also consider the compact GLS190 saw with measuring calliper bar, offering cutting angles from 50° left and right, pneumatic clamping for accuracy and an upstroking sawblade for ease of use.

Good Outlooks with SilverStar Combi Neutral 50/25

After SilverStar 1.0 E and SilverStar Combi Neutral 61/32, the Swiss company Glas Trösch Holding AG presents its third glass innovation in less than a year.

SilverStar Combi Neutral 50/25 combines efficient sun protection with heat protection and attractive optics. This new product is suitable for large-surface roof and facade systems.

The low light reflection of 12 percent is one of the properties of the multifunctionai SilverStar coating. The solar radiation heat is reflected with such efficiency that the degree of total energy transmission amounts to no more than 25 percent (g-value as per DIN 67507). At the same time, the selectivity index of 2.00 allows the SilverStar coating package to offer light transmission of 50 percent. In this way, the intelligent coating design prevents undesired room heating in summer while still ensuring plenty of natural daylight inside the building. In the wintertime SilverStar Combi Neutral 50/25 has good heat insulation properties. With a U-value of 1.1 W/m2k (as per DIN EN 673) the SilverStar coating allows for substantial cost savings. These values are monitored on a permanent basis: Glas Trösch is the first in the sector to assure the high standard of its products via internal and external quality inspections, also and above all during actual production.

SilverStar Combi Neutral 50/25 combines functional performance with optics. The systematic research of Glas Trösch's Coating Systems' development team has resulted in the complete absence of redshift, even when viewed from an acute angle. The glass retains its good reflection aesthetics. The Combi coating allows for a transparent architecture and ensures an externally uniform appearance from all angles, also with large glazing surfaces. Colour matched spandrel glazing rounds off the homogeneous plan view. The SilverStar coating is particularly suited for use in buildings with large glass surfaces, for facades with point fixings, glass roof constructions and structural glazing. Compliance with high structural standards combined with high user benefits allows SilverStar Combi Neutral 50/25 to meet the challenges of modern architecture.

'Installing an attractive front door is an extremely simple way of improving a property,' said KAT director David Richards. 'Your front door is both an essential security device, and a reflection of your personality. Choosing a front door is as much an emotional decision as a rational one. By adding both the Classic and Elegance doors to its product range, a window company has the solutions to all elements of this decision making process.'

The Elegance range has achieved the Secured By Design police preferred specification. Multipoint locking and anti-pick, anti-drill handles are fitted as standard. The locking system has been tested to exceed the security requirements of the GGF's 6.6.2 (PAS024) security test.

Chamfer Completes 70mm Stable for Ovolo Pioneer

PVCu fabricator the Whiteline Group has launched a new 70mm Chamfered window system to fill a gap which customers said existed in its market.

Following the successful launch of its Goldline 70 Ovolo system last year, fabricator of Kömmerling products the Whiteline Group, based in Eastbourne, is now finding growing demand for Kömmerling's other 70mm system, which is a Chamfered profile.

'The classically-curved Ovolo was the only 70mm system we manufactured,' says Bryan Leach, Managing Director of Whiteline's PVCu Division. 'But our research showed demand for a bevelled or Chamfered edge 70mm profile, too.'

In response to this demand, Whiteline - which has an annual turnover in excess of £15m and has the capacity of 3,500 frames a week - has just launched the new Goldline 70 Chamfered window, which is a 70mm version of its existing Goldline 58mm.

The new 70mm range comprises outward opening casements, top-hung or side-hung, modern tilt and turn windows plus a wide range of residential doors, all with low line gaskets and a choice of Ovolo or Chamfered beads. There are two specifications: the Classic, with a Charisma handle and a five point locking mechanism; or the Elite, which has an Ultima handle and seven-point security locking including hinge bolts. In addition to the colour option of white, the Elite system can also be specified in a Mahogany or Golden Oak woodgrain finish.

Whiteline had originally been gearing up for the 70mm Chamfered system around three years ago, but then began working closely with Kömmerling on creating the new Ovolo system.

Sales & Marketing Director Peter Hand says that having been involved in the design and development of the Ovolo system, they chose to be the first to bring that to the market, instead of offering the Chamfered product at that time.

'However, we saw an increasing demand for a 70mm Chamfered system, particularly from potential customers in areas where we were not trading. And customer research, carried out in-house through our sales force, and through feedback from questionnaires, showed that some of our network 300 installers were getting a 70mm Chamfered system from another manufacturer. Most of them, however, showed a strong preference for just using one supplier, so we felt the time was right to start manufacturing!

It also means that Goldline installers, who only use Whiteline, can now offer homeowners more variety.'

Whiteline manufactures purely for the trade and around 90% of its windows are for replacement domestic use. 'Existing customers will be able to offer the new window alongside the existing 58mm Chamfered product. It will primarily help us gain new business from potential customers who haven't used Whiteline before because, until now, we haven't offered a 70mm Chamfered product.'

As the new system can be manufactured on the same machines which produce the Ovolo system, Production Director Robin Funnell says the level of additional investment needed for the Chamfered window has been minimal. 'We put around £600,000 investment in to get the Ovolo system absolutely right, so our machines and tooling are already in place to guarantee excellent construction quality for this new window. One factory is dedicated to both 70mm systems, with lines for the 58mm windows at another two factories. However, the factories have been set up to easily switch systems, so that lead times of five days for unglazed and ten days for standard glazed, can be maintained even in the event of a fault on a production line.'

The Goldline 70 Ovolo currently represents around 20% of Whiteline's business, but the company is now looking for this new window to help its 70mm products, both Ovolo and Chamfered, to account for half of its projected increased sales.
Quality accreditations on Whiteline's existing range include BS kitemarks 7412 and 7950 and the company is now working towards gaining those same accreditations for the new system.

When fitted with Pilkington K Low 'E' glass, all Whiteline's windows are Part L compliant; something which Peter Hand says is a pre-requisite to their network of Goldline installers. 'Many of our customers often get asked by the homeowner about 'U' values and Part L, and they have to demonstrate compliance.'

One of Eastbourne's biggest employers, Whiteline has around 250 staff working from four manufacturing sites in the town, totaling 85,000 square feet. In addition, there is a new division 'Roofs for Conservatories Direct' dedicated to manufacturing conservatory roofs, with eleven staff working from an 18,000 square foot factory.

Staff training is on-going, with fabricators being multi-skilled in a number of production areas.

Lindman's Doors Prove their Durability

Nearly 20 years after Lindman first pioneered the new concept of composite doorsets in the UK, early examples installed in the 1980s are still living up to their guarantee of durability, weatherproofing, impact resistance and high security.

In re-visiting some of its early work, Lindman says that most have received very little maintenance and look as good as new. Where owners or tenants have changed, some of the new occupants are even unaware that the door is not made of hardwood. Conversely, where there is damage from vandalism or attempted burglaries, this is easily repaired. Just changing the colour is easy to do with stain or gloss paint.

'Specifiers looking for best value in the long term have been disappointed with the performance of other door types, particularly through-coloured thermoplastic ABS/PVCu, which deteriorates more quickly than forecast. It also has environmental concerns, unlike Lindman's composite doors which only use thermosetting resins in their construction.' says the company.

Since the 1980s, Lindman's doorsets, including a fire resistant version, have won the approval of Secured by Design (SBD), the police preferred specification.
Using a similar thermosetting composite, although processed in a different way ('pultruded'), Lindman has produced a complete new range of window systems, Pultec(r), which is guaranteed for 20 years and is available in any colour including black, yet is still as maintenance free as PVCu.

A Clean Pair of Wheels!

Supplier of patio doors Sliders UK has further improved its product with the introduction of high load bearing stainless steel tandem wheels. The new wheels are manufactured fully from stainless steel, each wheel has a load capacity of 80kg and features 8mm overall adjustment.

'We constantly ensure that Sliders doors are produced to the highest possible standards,' comments director Mike Spain, 'this further enhancement has been introduced with no increase in price to our customers.

Sliders UK has grown dramatically since its launch in November to become one of the UK's largest specialist suppliers of in-line patio doors. The company's customer profile is in the main larger fabricators. Typically this type of customer needs short lead times, competitive prices and reliable high quality manufacture.
Sliders UK has established itself to meet the demanding requirements of this market. Patios doors remain Sliders focus although the company is looking at other niche products which remain outside of the production scope of the vast majority of fabricators.

'It seems there is a growing trend for the few patio specialists that exist to expand production into traditional window and door configurations. As a fabricator the question must surely be asked whether it is right to support a company who chooses to compete for standard window and door business - isn't such a company a wolf in sheeps clothing? When exactly does specialist supplier become a competitor? At Sliders UK the company prefers and will continue to remain - fabricator friendly!' says director Mike Spain.

Phanto-tastic Solution for Aluminium from Promac

With the UK and Irish construction markets still buoyant, and curtain walling companies world-wide looking for a slice of the action, now is a good time for aluminium fenestration and fabrication companies to take a look at the range of solutions offered by Italian manufacturer Emmegi, and offered in the UK exclusively by Promac.

Emmegi offers increasingly automated solutions, which now include state of the art robotic and CNC operating systems.

One of the latest products from this stable is Phantomatic, an N/C machining centre with 3 axes, designed for machining figures which can be computer programmed. It can perform drilling, milling and tapping on one or more sides of the profile. It can easily accommodate aluminium, PVC and iron workpieces (the latter up to 3 mm thick).

A number of features have been engineered into this range of machines to ensure maximum speed of operation, ease of use and operator safety. For example, the Isola guard allows unattended automatic operation, guaranteeing a high standard of safety and the capacity to use a wide range of special tools.

A specially designed Head with output at the side (optional on the T3) allows machining operations from 0 to 180 degrees. This means it is not necessary to rotate the workpiece for milling the various faces, up to three at the same time.

A Pneumatic tool magazine with 3+1 places provides automatic tool change, while the adjustable Lubrica system (optional on the T3) allows efficient cooling of tools mounted on angular and vertical machining heads (T4 only). An optional special coolant provides cooling for tools when machining ferrous materials.

Also exclusive to the T4 model is a table which, by moving laterally along the Y-axis, considerably increases the work range of the double machining heads.

The Phantomatic T6 has six different tools in the same unit, 4 independent and configurable motor-driven spindles, and two modes of operation: either just one work area for bars up to 6 metres long or, by raising a partition, division into two independent sectors with vice positioning and workpiece loading/unloading in concealed times.

The Phantomatic T4 is an automatic CNC machining centre with 3 controlled axes offering:
- Full guarding
- Machining on 5 faces
- Wide machining zone thanks to the automatic movement of the workpiece on the cross axis
- Automatic tool change
- Automatic angular machining head change (optional)
- Manual vice positioning
- Checking of vice position
- Hand held control pad for all functions

The Phantomatic 2400/3400 is a CNC machining centre with 3 controlled axes and an operator is required for manual vice positioning and tool change.

To run Phantomatic machines, Emmegi offers a software package in a Windows environment (CAMplus, Shape, Job, Drill) developed by EmmegiSoft. This package allows rapid definition, in graphic mode, of all the machining operations to be performed on the workpiece. It therefore takes only a few minutes to pass from the design stage to actual machining. The machine operator's tasks are simplified thanks to a user friendly guided interface.

This means that specialised personnel are not necessary, while production times and costs are reduced.

For those working in the window industry, the Phantomatic software is fully integrated with Frame Project Pro which is a program for controlling window/door manufacture.
