Ultraframe
Rewrites the Price Rule Book and Offers so Much More - for Less
Ultraframe,
the designer and manufacturer of conservatory systems, has torn up the
rule book in respect of what's thought of as 'standard'. In its drive
to improve value and innovation in conservatory systems, Ultraframe is
setting a new benchmark in the features and benefits of its Victorian
roof package.
Ultraframe has responded to increased demand for conservatory ancillaries,
such as UltraSelect and 25mm polycarbonate glazing, and is now passing
on these benefits to all installers. The company has introduced anew pricing
structure, which is not only simplified but now includes more options
'as standard', and offers improved value.
Where there is no requirement for part or all of the new 'as standard'
options, customers simply discount it back to the specification required.
The most popular options previously available on a Victorian roof as extras
are now included 'as standard' - saving installers as much as £204
on a 3m x 3m Victorian. For example, 80% of all roofs were previously
specified with 25mm polycarbonate; while UltraSelect, the decorative fascia
strip, has market penetration into a third of all roofs barely 18 months
after launch. And now both are 'as standard'.
The new Ultraframe price architecture for its enhanced 'as standard' Victorian
roof package, when combined with the complementary new Uzone roof system,
reinforces Ultraframe's position as a one stop shop for complete conservatory
systems with products at all price points.
Included 'as standard ' in the price of the classic Ultraframe Victorian
roof are:
* 25mm polycarbonate in any colour for the same price including Solar
Control;
* A choice of all foils internally and/or externally at the same price;
* Ultraframe Conservaflash - the pre-engineered flashing system;
* UltraSelect 2003 range (all at the same price as 2002);
* Eavesflow cross flow ventilation;
* Gable Support System (on suitable duo pitch roofs).
Ultraframe has increased the thickness of its polycarbonate glazing panels
- in all colours and specifications, including Solar Control - to 25mm
'as standard', so its Victorian range offers even better thermal performance
and extended use in the winter months. But it's all about choice - and
16mm polycarbonate is of course available at a lower price point.
Now Victorian conservatories need no longer be white as the choice of
Rosewood, Light Oak and Mahogany foiled finishes is available 'as standard'
- and at the same price. But foil is far from obligatory - and standard
white is necessarily offered, at a reduced cost.
The Conservaflash™ 'as standard' pre-formed flashing system saves
at least an hour on most installations and provides a 'predictable' and
consistent engineered solution to the often complex problem of flashing,
leading to increased installation proficiency. Similarly, UltraSelect,
Ultraframe's range of decorative fascia strips is now included as standard.
A new range is soon to be launched as well. Adoption of Conservaflash™
is a matter of preference - and it can be omitted within the flexible
price structure.
All Victorian conservatories now include new eaves beam ventilation units
- Eavesflow - which are three times more effective than their predecessors,
extending the company's offer as being the only manufacturer to provide
built-in ventilation 'as standard'. Coming pre-formed, this system simply
clips into pre-punched slots in the glazing support trim for easy installation.
Depending on customer requirements, Eavesflow may not be required - perfectly
possible at lower cost in the new 'as standard' architecture.
The existing classic Victorian system is complemented by the introduction
of the new Uzone roof. Together, they are designed to improve product
performance and affordability, thereby unlocking mass market conservatory
sales, giving installers every opportunity to exploit a potential £40
billion market over the next 20 years.

Safeware 3+ is a 'Clean Face' lock with options of shootbolts at the top

door sets and is supplied with a range of stainless steel and die-cast
multi keep sets.
Depending on budget and door style, further shootbolts are offered for
additional security and on larger doors, improved sealing at the head
and cill of the door leaf.
Extra security comes in the shape of Safeware 7 - a seven-point lock offering
three counter-opposing hooks and four adjustable rollers or cams. The

Rehau's
new 60mm system Rehau-Tritec is available for the first time in a choice
of more than 150 RAL colours.
Customers can now order bar lengths in Rehau-Tritec colour coated on either
one face, both faces or on all surfaces using Rehau's established Acryl
II PVCu colouring system.
Acryl II is a two-part acrylic coating system first developed by Rehau
for the German automotive market to coat bumpers for Mercedes and BMW.
It is colourfast and weather resistant and does not affect the impact
resistance of PVCu. The application method means that the colour penetrates
the surface of the profile and cannot be scratched off or damaged in use.
Rehau already offers this service on all its relevant S702 (60mm) and
S706 (70mm) profiles to enable customers to meet demand from both the
commercial and domestic replacement markets for coloured PVCu windows

Multi-point
Locking Provides a Strong Case for Steel Windows

based Clement Windows Group has devised
a multi-point locking steel window. The device is the first of its kind
in the steel window industry and is a feature normally only seen in conventional
PVC windows. Clement Windows has also recently developed and released
the industry's first FENSA registered Part L compliant steel window.

Industrial Releases Triple Diamond Belt Machine
UK
based engineering firm, Ashton Industrial, has recently released the newest
addition to its range of grinding machines based on diamond grinding belt
technology.
The diamond impregnated grinding belts now offer the industry a robust
belt that exhibits extremely long life, whilst offering multiple benefits
of lower grinding pressure, fast cut, ultra smooth ground finish and most
importantly, no carborundum particles to scratch the glass.
Ashton reports that its existing diamond belt customers are realising
substantial savings through reduced processing time, reduced operator
fatigue and a dramatic reduction of furnace losses due to improved and
‘crack free’ glass edges.
The company states that the normally used abrasive belts create a multitude
of microscopic cracks in the glass edge due to their very aggressive grinding
particles. Diamond belts do not cause this effect and leave an extremely
fine ground finish that can be very easily polished.
The Ashton Triple Belt Arrissing Machine is an extremely heavy duty model
with all external drives and motors and oversized (175mm) diameter pulleys.
Ashton reports that these new models are just as efficient when processing
straight edged glass and/or shaped glass.

Recycled Glass Cullet from Finland
Suomen
Uusioaines Ltd of Forssa, Finland now guarantees that its recycled cullet
contains less than 10g per tonne of ceramics, less than 5 g/t of aluminium
or iron and less than 5 g/t of lead. Ceramic content is frequently as
low as 1-2 g/t. Organic impurities are guaranteed not to exceed 500 g/t
and humidity 2%. These high standards result from the use of new crushing
and sorting machinery and of the latest purification technology.
Samples are taken hourly at Suomen Uusioaines, and after every shift a
10kg sample undergoes detailed laboratory analysis in order to ensure
quality and avoid the processing problems associated with the presence
of ceramics and other contaminants in recycled cullet.
lmproved colour sorting
The company recycles over 60,000 tpa of glass, and supplies its products
in
particle sizes up to 50 mm. Suomen Uusioaines obtains raw materials from
municipal sources and hospitals as well as from the building trade and
the automotive industry. The end products supplied by the company are
flint, mixed (clear and green) or brown, as well as float glass cullet.
Major users
Major users of Suomen Uusioaines cullet include Saint-Gobain lsover who
incorporate float and mixed cullet in their Isover-Comfort range of glass
wool building and thermal insulation products. Packaging manufacturers
Owens-Illinois and Rexam use Suomen Uusioaines' cullet in the production
of bottle and container glass. Other customers include manufacturers of
'eco-tile' cladding bricks for buildings. Recycled cullet is also suitable
for use in the production of sand-blasting and filter element materials.
The use of recycled glass protects the environment by saving raw materials
and by reducing the energy required in manufacturing processes. Suomen

sealants with the recent introduction of Hodgson Fire Foam. Having excellent
adhesion to a wide variety of building materials such as brick, concrete,
metal and PVCu this flame retardant construction foam conforms to DIN
4102-part 1 class B1: 1998 and prEN1366 Part 4:1998.
Hodgson Fire Foam fills joints up to 40mm x 40mm and is used for gap filling,

Wendland has introduced two new features to its all-new Styal™ conservatory roofing system. The new Rafter End Caps and Eaves Beam Cleats have been developed by Wendland's design team in direct response to installer requests.
Manufactured
in injection moulded PVC, Wendland's new Rafter End Caps slide over the
roof's rafter top caps to fully conceal them from view while the bracket
acts as an integral glazing stop to ease installation. This gives the
exterior of the finished roof a neater and more streamlined appearance.
Rafter End Caps are available in a choice of white, cream, brown and caramel

Semi–Automatic Arrissing Line from Ashton Industrial

Industrial has added another new option to the company's range of arrissing
machinery. The 'Ashton' Semi–Automatic Arrissing Line provides a
reduced cost option for companies looking to achieve many of the benefits
of a full Automatic Line.
Whilst the Semi–Automatic Line is not capable of processing pieces
as quickly as an Auto Line, it is capable of turning out pieces at a consistently
fast rate.
Advantages include the ability to provide a consistently high arriss quality
to random sizes of rectangular glass from a maximum agreed size down to
approximately 300mm x 300mm. Controlled use of diamond grinding belts
to achieve optimum use, resulting in significant saving in abrasives spend.
This is achieved through the 'pusher' function, which has been a successful
feature of the Automatic Arrissing Line.
There is a significant reduction in manual fatigue/human error/RSI etc.
and reduced footprint in comparison to an auto line – size is only
approximately three times the size of the maximum piece of glass to be
processed.
The process is simple. A piece of glass is loaded against a datum on a
castor pallet which is in the raised position. The piece is driven forward
through arrisser one. At the same time the castor pallet lowers. The piece
is then driven across a conveyor to the datum in line with arrisser two
and is then driven through the arrisser.
The castor pallet is then raised, the operator turns the piece through
90º and the machine repeats the previous steps. Once the piece has returned
to the start position, having been fully arrissed, the castor pallet lifts
and the operator passes the piece of glass through to the washing machine
(or the next part of the process).

Palace Hotel, Melbourne, Australia (2002): Psychedelic glass screens for
1960s-style hotel bistro
To achieve a very different result from the Tenterfield panel, a glass
screen using clear SentryGlas® Expressions™ is the backdrop for
a specially-commissioned psychedelic design supplied by Melbourne (Australia)
interior design company Club Décor for the bistro area of the city’s
famous Palace Hotel. The design complements the 1960s décor of
the establishment.
Palace Hotel employee Sally Zaulavskas told LGN: 'I’ve never seen
anything like these glass panels before! Bright colours are used but very
tastefully so that the design appeals to the mid-day crowd of older people
as well as the younger generation who turn out for late-night parties.'

Tenterfield School of Arts (2002)
One of the first applications for SentryGlas® Expressions™ was
completed in Australia in 2002. The Tenterfield School of Arts is historically
significant as the site where, on 24th October 1889, Sir Henry Parkes,
then Premier of New South Wales, delivered his famous speech known as
the ‘Tenterfield Oration’, calling for the Federation of the
Australian colonies. This event has been widely acknowledged as a catalyst
for the federation movement and led to the creation of the Australian
nation. For many years Tenterfield has been known as `the Birthplace of
Federation’.
In 1998, Tenterfield Shire Council and the National Trust received a major
grant from the Commonwealth Government’s Federation Fund to conserve
and refurbish the building, to house the shire library and theatre and
to create a Museum that celebrated the significance of the place.
Parkes’ speech and the banquet that followed are celebrated in the
Original Hall of the Museum. At the centre of this room a ten metre long
showcase doubles as a table where the annual commemorative Parkes Banquet
is held.
Project architect Julie Mackenzie of Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects
of Sydney told LGN: 'Historic photographs and physical evidence revealed
that the Original Hall was formerly divided by a timber prosenium wall,
which had angled sides. As part of the Museum project we decided to recreate
the former wall, but in a clearly contemporary way - in steel framed glass.
We had sourced an historic photograph from the State Library of NSW of
a banquet held in the room around the time of the Tenterfield Oration
and decided to laminate the image onto the glass. The project team worked
closely with a graphic artist to establish where the framing and cropping
should occur. Fine steel framing was proposed to the glass in memory of
local green houses rumoured to have been built using historic glass plate
negatives. The wall was divided into 160 glass panels similar in size
and proportion to the glass negative from which the image was taken.'
The resulting digital image was e-mailed to laminator DMS of Melbourne
to provide sample panels. DMS owner Don Mathieson said: 'SentryGlas®
Expressions™ technology was quick and easy to use. The approved printed
laminated glass was ready to be installed just a few days.' The 4.1 m
tall by 7.8 m wide laminated safety glass wall is only 7.52 mm thick.
The resolution of the image is 360 dpi. An opaque white background is
used and the wall is back-lit.
Mackenzie continued: 'Using small sized plates also had a practical advantage.
The glass wall is situated in a very public place and there is a door
in the wall where visitors enter the Museum. The laminated glass protects
the image from fingerprints and provides excellent safety benefits. However,
if one of the glass panels breaks, a replacement panel can be easily manufactured.
This is a major practical and cost advantage over the screen printing
process, where we could never expect the supplier to keep copies of the
hundreds of screens involved.'
Tenterfield Shire Council’s general manager, Mark Arnold, said: 'In
our first year we have welcomed 10,000 visitors to the Museum and we expect
the number to increase in years to come. There have been no problems with
wear and tear to the laminated glass panel, even though part of it forms
the entry door to the Museum’s great hall. The laminated glass provides
excellent protection of the images in the face of large numbers of visitors.
It is also a very safe solution which is easy to maintain and clean.'
