'They said it Couldn't be Done' - A Truly Inspirational Design

Pro-Glass by Darby has launched its new range of 'Proactive' print designs.

Proactive printed glasses is one of a family of processed glass ranges forming Darby Glass's Pro-Glass by Darby family of internal architectural glass products. A design-lead range, Proactive was the obvious choice for the new showpiece boardroom at Darby Glass's Scunthorpe headquarters (pictured left).

'For our new boardroom, we wanted to come up with a design that would test our expertise to the full,' says Sales & Marketing Director Angela Cann-Sagoe. 'We have always had the reputation of being the best quality glass printer in the industry and we wanted to demonstrate this with a powerful and eye-catching graphic.

'We selected a series of images from contracts for which we had supplied the glass and introduced our corporate mission statement, to be the 'Supplier of Choice'. Initially, the general opinion of every member of Darby Glass's design team was that 'it couldn't be done'. However, by pooling the full resources of years of experience from different parts of the industry, the Darby team came together to achieve a perfectly lined through and truly 'Inspirational' design.'

With a 5.7m wide span, the finished image has such a high level of detail that it requires the assistance of an eyeglass to view the intricacy of the design.

Such an achievement did not come without its problems. The printing technology and understanding of design translation on to glass has been notoriously difficult for the glass processor and partitioning contractor alike. Additional difficulties were encountered because of varying glass sizes, tolerances and uneven floors and ceilings.

Comments Angela Cann-Sagoe: 'By combining excellent teamwork with our collective skills and expertise, all the problems were solved. With our boardroom design and application, Pro-Glass by Darby has truly demonstrated what can be achieved, not only through simple geometric patterns but also complex 3D images.

'The creation of our new Proactive design team, combined with the launch of our new print themes, was the first phase in our transition to become a design-lead processed glass division. Phase two in our continuing development and automation is a new printing facility, which has increased our printed image size to 1500mm x 2800mm.'

Veka Troughing System Solves Rainwater Problems on the Terraces

PVCu glazing and building products manufacturer, Veka, has introduced the Heritage Rainwater System to resolve a problem encountered when refurbishing the guttering of period terraced properties.

Many terraced properties built in the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in the north of England, were installed with rainwater systems known as 'troughing'. These run continuously for the length of the terrace, manufactured from heavy solid timber batons with channels routed into the upper surface to carry the rainwater away, to be down-piped at one end.

Many such systems are in serious need of repair, an expensive and time consuming process that requires specialist services for the manufacture of replacement products, and relatively large teams to carry out the replacement. As the troughing is continuous, any sections to be replaced must be manufactured to fit and complement the whole run to ensure the effectiveness of the system, as well as to maintain an attractive appearance.

Recognising the extent of the problem Burnley-based Veka has launched a PVCu replacement system. The new system is light, easy to fit, indistinguishable from the original when installed and virtually indestructible. And, as has been proven by windows manufactured from PVCu, the system is impervious to rot and corrosion and requires only minimal maintenance.

The Veka Heritage Rainwater System brings the previously complex task of troughing replacement into the 21st century, whilst maintaining the traditional appearance of the property. As Heritage troughing is light and easy to cut, replacement becomes a one person operation. When combined with the lower cost of the profiles when compared to traditional timber replacements, installation costs and times can be slashed.

Heritage Rainwater Systems are available in black, white or brown and are available with a wide range of accessories including all jointing and brackets. Manufactured from virgin PVCu and under conditions strictly controlled to minimise environmental impact.

Lorient Launches New Glazing Gasket

An important feature of many fire doors is a glazed panel, assisting safe everyday use of the door, and enabling the building's occupants to be aware of danger on the other side of the door in the case of a fire. Special fire resistant glass needs to be used for these panels, but in the intense heat of a fire, the glass needs to be held firmly in place, and the edges of the aperture effectively sealed, if the door is to perform to its full potential.

Lorient Polyproducts, a leader in fire and smoke sealing systems for door assemblies, has extended its range of flexible intumescent glazing gaskets to include a new size designed specifically to accommodate the latest developments in the thicknesses of fire resistant glass now available. Designated System-36/7, the new gasket is suitable for use with 7mm to 8mm thick glass, and has been successfully tested at Warrington Fire Research Centre for 30 minutes integrity. Glass types include: Pyrostem, Pyroguard (both clear and wired), Pyrodur Plus and Pyrobelite.

System-36/7 joins the five other sizes in the Lorient System-36 range, which now encompasses gaskets for glass thicknesses from 4mm to 22mm. All System-36 products are resilient U-shaped profiles, designed to push-fit into place over the edge of the glass. The gaskets can be used with a range of standard fixing beads, and are flexible enough to be fitted to even circular vision panels if required. All Lorient System-36 gaskets have attained Certifire approval, (certificate numbers CF184 and CF202) and all product sold is unobtrusively marked with the Lorient name and identification codes for complete traceability.

Plastmo does French

To accomodate the demands of many UK residents purchasing and renovating French holiday homes, Plastmo fabricator VIP Windows & Doors Ltd is now manufacturing PVCu inward-opening French market windows at its St Albans factory.

Using Plastmo 62mm System Index profile, VIP has effectively reversed a standard casement window, transferring it into a minature French door, with its transom coupled to the sash and shootbolts in each sash. Both sashes are fitted with pin-hinges and can lift off the frame of the internally beaded window,to fit the outer frame.

VIP MD Dave Booth comments 'I already have a healthy order book from the many 'Brits' purchasing convertable properties over there, particularly those who cannot speak fenestration French. Inward-opening windows are far simpler to maintain and clean than our British variety and I forsee a potentially good UK market as well'

Marian's New Door System Protects Small Hartlepool Fingers

A long-established engineering firm has launched a new steel door range that claims to eliminate the risk of fingers becoming trapped on the hinge side.

Marian Doors & Shutters has completed the first installation of its Safe System at the main entrance of Kingsley Primary School, Hartlepool, which has nearly 500 pupils aged from three to eleven.

Marian Doors & Shutters, based in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, is nearly fifty years old and supplies a comprehensive range of security doors and shutters throughout the UK and Ireland.

Every year, some 30,000 people, 60% ofthem children, trap their fingers in doors, with some 1,500 accidents requiring plastic or reconstructive surgery - a significant risk that is recognised in legislation and by the Health and Safety Executive.

The new Marian system is designed for use in public buildings and incorporates a round pivot post profile that cuts out the risk of fingers becoming trapped on the hinge side - a real risk in a busy primary school.

In addition, its steel construction offers security, strength and durability - whilst able to accommodate safety glass up to 30mm thick.

Marian Doors & Shutters provides full design and technical support - and the new anti-pinch system, available in either single or double-leaf configuration, can be tailored to suit individual requirements.

The firm offers comprehensive security door solutions through a wide range of standard or bespoke products - from general purpose steel security doors through to ballistic and blast resistant doors.

'We are pleased to now have an anti-pinch door to complement our range of security doors and shutters. The risk of finger entrapment is very real, particularly for children, and we are pleased to be now offering a solution,' said John McDonnell, managing director of Marian Doors & Shutters.

'The anti-pinch system is suited to places that have a large volume of human traffic making it ideal for use in schools, colleges, libraries and other public buildings,' he said.

Yale - Making Homes Secure

Yale has introduced the longer 20mm bolt to the British Standard Insurance Approved Yale Night Latch and Mortice Lock ranges. Both ranges feature the new 20mm bolt, which in turn delivers a far higher level of engagement between the lock and the strike plate, improving the performance of these locks under forced attack.

The new 20mm bolt BS1E and BS2E Yale Night Latches feature an internal lockable handle, which is suitable for glazed doors, as the handle can not be turned through a smashed window. Furthermore, the automatic dead locking latchbolt is drill and saw resistant and provides defence against carding.

The new 20mm bolt BS Yale Mortice lock range also offers a much higher level of security, as the 40% increase in the bolt size improves the resistance against forced attack. Available as the BS PM560E 5 lever sashlock with a reversible latch making it suitable for either left or right hung doors and the BS PM562E 5 lever deadlock.

As a Secured by Design licence holder, All new BS Yale 20mm bolt Night Latches and Mortice Locks are accredited as a 'Police Preferred Specification'. They also exceed BS3621:1998, are endorsed by insurance companies as well as being recommended by the Police and Neighbourhood Watch.

Balcas Launches Easyfix System to Slash Windowboard Fixing Costs

Balcas Kildare - the independent manufacturer of primed MDF mouldings for the architectural and housebuilding sectors - has launched a patented windowboard fixing system that claims to dramatically reduce typical installation times.

'The Balcas Easyfix system is an invisible fixing system which allows the windowboard to be fixed in minutes thereby offering significant on-site labour cost savings. As well as offering speed and simplicity of installation, use of the Balcas Easyfix system is easily adjustable to suit different construction types and also eliminates the possibility of damage to the surface of the windowboard common with traditional fixing methods.'says the company.

Balcas estimates that use of the Easyfix windowboard system will allow the 16 different windowboards found in a typical four bedroom detached house to be fixed in up to 75% less time than traditional methods while also eliminating the need for filling, an undercoat, and sanding down.

The Balcas Easyfix system is based on a metal fixing with a shaped lug. The fixing's lug then fits securely into a precut groove in the underside of the Balcas windowboard. The fixing should then be rotated by hand through 90% into position. Finally the fixing is screw-fixed to the substrate where it will remain hidden while firmly securing the windowboard in place.

Balcas has also announced that it is shortly to launch a version of the Easyfix system which can be used for internal door frames, again with theadvantage of easy fixing and adjustability.

In addition to windowboards, the Balcas range of primed, moisture-resistant MDF internal mouldings currently includes skirtings, dado rails and architraves.Other products available from Balcas include the Fable door lining system and the Balcas Wall and Stair Panelling system.
