Weatherproofing in Double Quick Time with Conservaflash™

Ultraframe, the designer and manufacturer of conservatory systems, has launched a new pre-formed PVC flashing system.

The new system, which claims to save at least an hour on most conservatory installations, provides an engineered solution to the often complex problem of conservatory flashing. Conservaflash™ offers a pre-packed solution to the installer, without any of the environmental risks of traditional lead flashing. In addition, because the new flashing comes preconfigured with the roof, separate lead cutting, sourcing and waste is obviated. The system also includes a pre-formed soaker that's pre-clipped into the starter bar and fits behind the flashing.

Twin weatherbar grooves act as a primary weatherseal and locator for silicone, while on the front face capillary grooves prevent ingress of wind driven moisture. Thanks to a 93-degree angle the flashing is physically restrained into the chase and ensures integral mechanical retention in tandem with the wedge clips on the top edge and the wedge ribs on the underside. This means that Conservaflash™ will always be held firmly in place during back pointing.

Profiled corners, radiused to the largest angle grinder, eliminates the need to 'over cut' the mortar joint, saving time during installation.

The system is suitable for the majority of Victorian, P-shape, lean-to and Ultralite 5000 PVC conservatories.

James Harcourt Offers Exterior Doors

James Harcourt, the new, national brand of PVCu windows, doors and conservatories from Bowater Windows and WHS Halo, is offering its Approved Installers an exclusive range of composite exterior doors.

Manufactured using the latest polymer technologies to combine durability with aesthetics, James Harcourt composite doors feature a natural wood grain finish and high definition wood mouldings to create the character of solid hardwood.Unlike the majority of composite doors, the natural grain finish contained within the leaf is deep enough to allow a degree of sanding to remove light scratches.

At the heart of each door is a patented, high-density foam core, surrounded by a laminated timber sub-frame.The reinforced door surface is formed and bonded to the core in a 'one step' moulding process.

'This process increases skin toughness and ensures that James Harcourt composite doors do not suffer from de-lamination, whereby the skin of the door separates from the inner foam. Plus it ensures there are no voids within the composite or any bubbles, which give the door a high level of dimensional stability. The core density of the composite doors, together with the surfaces, is equal to traditional wood density, making them highly durable. 'In addition, James Harcourt composite doors are low maintenance and offer excellent weather protection and resistance to fire. In the correct specification the doors will easily meet the 'Secured by Design' standard recommended by many Crime Prevention Officers and insurance companies.' says the company.

The James Harcourt composite door range offers three standard options - Georgian panelled door with glazed fanlight, Victorian glazed door and Edwardian glazed door, all of which feature an engineered glazing solution and are available on a guaranteed 'fast track' delivery turnaround.

For added security, multi-point locks and security door chains are available, plus bespoke items such as handles, letterplates, numerals, knockers and 'spyglass' viewers, can be fitted to meet end users' specific requirements.

Janex Launches Tenth Anniversary Range of Doors

Janex, the UK supplier of Scandinavian windows and doors, will be launching three new styles of its successful brand, Janexdoor, to celebrate the company's tenth year in business.

The doors, which have been put through rigorous testing by TRADA, have passed with flying colours to be accredited with PAS 023 and PAS 024 - which test the performance and security of the door.

One of the criteria for testing the performance of the door assembly to PAS 023, is to open, close and lock the door at least 50,000 times - this is equivalent to a door being opened and closed 13 times a day for ten years. The Janexdoor was opened, closed and locked 176,000 times without performance failure.

PAS 024, which tests the enhanced security performance requirements of the door, also had several criteria for testing, one of which was to apply forces with a hydraulic ram to the locking points and the hinges. To pass this test the doorset has to withstand forces equivalent to loading a weight of 450kg to each locking point - the hinge withstood 1,150kg and the locking point 770kg.

Vincent Kerrigan, Deputy Test Manager at TRADA Chiltern, said: 'Janex products have been successfully tested by TRADA's testing division, Chiltern Dynamics, for security, durability and weather-tightness, and continually demonstrated the highest performance levels tested in TRADA's laboratories.

'ln addition, Chiltern Dynamics is continuing to test Janex products to explore the limits of their performance as part of Janex's on-going research and development.'

Alex Brown, managing director of Janex Group said: 'The products are ideal for Social Housing, Local Authorities and Housing Associations - new build and refurbishment projects. For example, Janex has been supplying window and doors for several of Home Housing's projects in Newcastle and for the past five years to Easthall Housing Association for a regeneration project in Easterhouse, Glasgow.'

Janex was founded ten years ago by Norwegian Jan Skaara, as a supplier partnership in Scotland. Jan recognised an important market in the UK for high quality, high performance Scandinavian timber windows and doors. He initially set his sights on Scotland, where the weather conditions can be similar, but not as extreme as the harsh Scandinavian climate. The company expanded into England and bought over Swedoor UK three years ago. The company has enjoyed remarkable growth following a real demand for Scandinavian building products and was recently recognised as a Gazelle company by leading business newspaper Business am.

Technal Launches FXi65 Window Range

Technal has expanded its FXi suite of commercial aluminium windows with the addition of a 65mm module designed to give specifiers more choice and flexibility to meet the requirements of Part L of the new Building Regulations.

The FXi65 window incorporates a 19mm flush polyamide thermal break and innovative gasket detailing to offer enhanced thermal performance. FXi is Technal's most technically advanced window suite to date and will help deliver finished buildings, which heat up more quickly, stay warmer longer and cost less to run.

The design of the 65mm system accommodates 17mm up to 48mm double glazed units, and allows more economical glass specifications to be used whilst still delivering the required U-value of 2.2W/mK, even with a glass centre pane U-value as high as 1.9W/mK. The launch of the new module means that with the right combination of frame and glazing, the requirements outlined in Part L can be met across Technal's FXi suite.

In tests to the new, more stringent BS EN standards, the company claims FXi65 met and in some cases exceeded the requirements. The system achieved the highest classification for air permeability, A*4, in tests up to 600 Pa; it was fully watertight up to 1200 Pa and was rated up to V*C5 for wind resistance which equates to a pressure of 2000 Pa.

To simplify specification, stock-holding and fabrication, FXi65 shares many common accessories with the FXi46 and FXi52 ranges. It also only requires one additional punch tool.

As with the other systems in the FXi suite, FXi65 can be supplied in a full range of configurations to suit most situations, both new build and refurbishment. These include fixed lights, projecting top and side hung, bottom hung, and tilt/turn.

In addition to the wide choice of polyester powder coated or Anolok finishes, FXi65 is also available in Technal's exclusive palette of striking flecked gloss CendrÈ colours.

Balcas Launches Easyfix System To Slash Windowboard Fixing Costs

Balcas Kildare - the independent manufacturer of primed MDF mouldings for the architectural and housebuilding sectors has launched a patented windowboard fixing system that claims to reduce typical installation times.

'The Balcas Easyfix system is an invisible fixing system which allows the windowboard to be fixed in minutes thereby offering significant on-site labour cost savings. As well as offering speed and simplicity of installation, use of the Balcas Easyfix system is easily adjustable to suit different construction types and also eliminates the possibility of damage to the surface of the windowboard common with traditional fixing methods.' says the company.

Balcas estimates that use of the Easyfix windowboard system will allow the 16 different windowboards found in a typical four bedroom detached house to be fixed in up to 75% less time than traditional methods while also eliminating the need for filling, an undercoat, and sanding down.

The Balcas Easyfix system is based on a robust metal fixing with a shaped lug. The fixing's lug then fits securely into a precut groove in the underside of the Balcas windowboard. The fixing should then be rotated by hand through 90% into position. Finally the fixing is screw-fixed to the substrate where it will remain hidden while firmly securing the windowboard in place.

Balcas has also announced that it is shortly to launch a version of the Easyfix system which can be used for internal door frames, again with the advantage of easy fixing and adjustability.

In addition to windowboards, the Balcas range of primed, moisture-resistant MDF internal mouldings currently includes skirtings, dado rails and architraves all of which claim to set new standards for ease of working and quality of finish. Other products available from Balcas include the Fable door lining system and the Balcas Wall and Stair Panelling system.

Howarth Timber Presents New Hinge Packer

Howarth Timber has produced an easy solution to the problems caused by the natural expansion and shrinkage of timber doors. The company's new hinge packer is designed to slot in between the door and hinge, and is easy to remove and replace during periods of moisture movement.

The swelling of the timber can not only lead to the door sticking, but to the binding of locks which work on a tight tolerance. The hinge packer can be slotted in and out of place straightforwardly by simply loosening off the hinge screws, without the need to remove the door from its frame.

The hinge packer is now fitted as standard to every timber door leaving Howarth Windows and Doors' factory, with the locking mechanisms set to the optimum, since at this point the doors will be as dry as at any time in their future life. When the doors swell due to moisture ingress, the packer can be removed, and should the door shrink again in the summer months, it can be refitted.

The full Howarth door range is detailed in the latest edition of the company's brochure, which also features Howarth's Hi Spec windows, sliding sash windows and conservatories.
Howarth Windows and Doors is a division of the Howarth Timber Group, which has been established for over 160 years. The group provides services including timber importing, timber engineering and merchanting across the UK.
