Get Out More with Arbokol 682

Adshead Ratcliffe has published a new technical data sheet for its Arbokol 682 balustrade sealant, detailing a method for the external glazing of balustrades.

For many years, Arbokol 682 has been widely used and specified by leading glass manufacturers for the internal bedding of glass balustrades. With the increasing emphasis on glass structures by designers and architects, this system has become more and more essential for high-profile installations.

The comprehensive range of ARBO sealants have been tested and approved on many types of glass and glazing systems. The Millennium Bridge, Stratford Station and Manchester Plaza are three outstanding examples of where Arbokol 682 Balustrade sealant has been used externally.

Vision Design (Mitcham) was responsible for the installation of the balustrades into these demanding ventures and Kite Glass manufactured the glass. It is as a result of projects like these that Adshead Ratcliffe believed it necessary to incorporate the external installation of glass balustrades using two-part sealant into its technical data sheets.

Vision Design prefers to use Arbokol 682 instead of pure mechanical fixing because this method provides an easier and faster installation process. In addition, not only do the use of wedges and 682 meet the requirements of BS 6180 but this system also aids and facilitates the alignment of the glass.

If you require technical advice regarding structural glazing or the sealing of glass structures, log on to http://www.arbo.co.uk or telephone: 01773 826661 to receive the latest technical data sheet.

Bohle's New Catalogue Concept

Bohle
has introduced the first edition of a new range of catalogues for its extensive portfolio of products. The Glass and Glazier 2003/2004 is a 558-page full colour catalogue packed with photographs and descriptions as well as prices for many of the company's core product lines.

Bohle's concept is based on bringing together products aimed at specific user groups, with individual guides covering all the items each customer type might require. For example, the new Glass and Glazier version includes Glass Cutting, Handling, Grinding, Drilling, Sawing and Bonding, together with Glazing Tools, Glass Machinery and Fittings. It also features brief overviews of the main products available for Glass Fusing, Art Glass and Picture Framing to demonstrate potential new profit areas for glaziers to explore. Another significant change is that the new literature now lists the current price against each item, plus any quantity related discounts, making it quicker and easier to use than previous catalogues.

Bohle is already planning further product brochures targeted at different industry sectors including Art Glass customers, Picture Framers and lndustrial Glass Processors. Additionally, the catalogues will be updated and replaced around every 12 months to ensure both the product details and prices are always up to date.

Commenting on this new approach, Gary Dean, Managing Director of Bohle UK Ltd says, 'The reaction from the market has been very favourable because it's makes it so much easier to find the product you're looking for. Also, customers particularly like the idea of being able to find the product and the price side by side, which we believe is a first for the industry. So far we have distributed over 4,000 of the first catalogue since the beginning of March 2003, and we are receiving many more requests for copies every day.'

A free copy of the Glass and Glazier 2003/2004 is available by calling Bohle on freephone 0800 616151.

TruSeal Offers New Insuledge Brochure Literature

TruSeal Technologies, Inc., a world leader in flexible spacer systems for insulating glass, has recently released a brochure detailing its new flexible warm-edge spacer, Insuledge™. The brochure describes Insuledge's tubular design, which the company claims makes it the warmest flexible insulating glass (IG) spacer system.

Insuledge incorporates a hollow, non-metallic tube design, resulting in superior thermal performance. The hollow core replaces conductive solid or foam materials with better insulating air space.

Insuledge's flexible tube design makes all types of insulating glass fabrication possible and cost effective. Correct lnstallation is Critical to Fire Door Performance

The Firefighters' strikes have served to remind people of the importance of fire safety precautions, which in turn has highlighted how many deaths occur due to the rapid spread of smoke and fiames once a blaze has started. It is a tragic but regular occurrence for people to suffocate in their sleep or fail to find refuge from the fire during the time it takes for help to arrive.

For this reason the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) is again emphasising the importance of specifying fire doors complying with all relevant standards and regulations, and that they should be correctly installed.

In addition to accrediting manufacturers of doors and doorsets and the suppliers of component parts, such as fire resisting glazing units, through its certification Scheme, the BWF also strives to ensure such doors perform effectively once fitted. Correct and conscientious installation is pivotal to their performance in real life situations.

For instance, a half hour fire door is quite liable to offer only five to 10 minutes protection if incorrectly fitted because smoke and hot gases will rapidly pass through gaps left around the frame or between the stops.
Each make and model of a fire door is accompanied by its own installation instructions. It is crucial that these should be followed, preferably by a fully qualified tradesman.

As Sharjeel Khawaja, BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door Scheme Manager says: 'lnstallation must not be viewed as a physical task in isolation, but rather the final stage in a process which allowed the door to be certificated.'

Underlining its concern over the correct installation procedures, the BWF has produced a new fact card that is available to everyone including trade contractors, general builders and construction companies, free of charge. It sets out all the relevant reasons behind the correct installation of fire doors, along with advice on contacting manufacturers wherever instructions are missing or incomplete.

Insulating Glass Units - how to Meet your Legal Requirements

CE marking of Insulating Glass Units - Manufacturer's Toolkit is a new CD-ROM from BSI. The Toolkit provides step-by-step guidance and assistance for manufacturers of insulating glass units working towards regulatory compliance (CE marking) of their units, in accordance with the Construction Products Directive (CPD) (89/106/EC)

What does the Toolkit contain?

The Toolkit contains a comprehensive collection of document templates, flowcharts, checklists and other tools to assist in meeting the legal requirements for CE marking. By following the flowcharts and making use of the relevant templates, a manufacturer may confidently proceed with the development of its factory production control system in the knowledge that such a system will satisfy the requirements within the Directive.

Is the CPD compulsory?
Compliance with the requirements of the CPD will be a legal requirement by 2005. A lot of work will be needed to achieve compliance so there's no time to lose. Ideally, preparing for CE marking should start now.

How can I save time and money?
Companies that fail to understand the complexities of the Directive, and as a result fail to comply with the CPD, will not be able to sell their products. They will simply go out of business! This Toolkit will do all the hard work by navigating the demands of the Directive and enabling manufacturers to prepare for type testing and subsequent CE marking, saving valuable time and money.

CE marking of Insulating Glass Units - Manufacturer's Toolkit CD-ROM Price: £499 +VAT (£399 +VAT until 30th April 2003)
