Planet’s Dean St John Honoured in International Business Awards
Dean St John, founder and chairman of Preston-based Planet PVC Group Ltd, the UK installer of conservatories, has carried off a coveted award at the North region finals of this year’s Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards. This is the second award in less than a week for Planet. On Friday 18th June, Planet won the G04 Awards for the Glass & Glazing Industry for ‘Best Promotional Campaign’.

Bohle Boosts Machinery Production
Bohle AG has extended its machinery production factory in Torgau, in the Saxony Region of Germany, as a response to growing demand for its range of glass processing machines throughout Europe and beyond. The new extension adds over 20,000sq ft to the existing production halls. An additional 50,000sq ft of land adjacent to the site has also been acquired to allow for further development.

Dishonest Builder Jailed Following DTI Prosecution
A bankrupt builder, who tried to hoodwink his creditors by concealing his assets, has been imprisoned for eight months following a DTI prosecution. Sudagar Singh Bamrah, of Dudley, Birmingham was made bankrupt on August 6th 2002, owing unpaid taxes of £59,598.94 to the Inland Revenue and debts to other creditors.

3i Acquires Bowater Building Products Group in 'Secondary Buyout'
3i, Europe’s leading private equity company, has joined forces with the existing management team to acquire Bowater Building Products Group from a consortium of other private equity investors. In a transaction valued at £52 million, 3i has acquired a majority stake in the £180 million turnover Bowater Building Products Group of companies and brands, which include WHS Halo, The Prime Connection, James Harcourt, Zenith and Staybrite.

Sentinel Doors Aqcuired by Therma-Tru as Fortune Brands Targets UK
Llantrisant based composite door manufacturer Sentinel Doors, has been bought out by Ohio company Therma-Tru Doors - now part of Fortune Brands - for an undisclosed sum, likely to have reached eight figures. The US company said the acquisition was to accelerate its growth in the UK.

502 Million Windows are Sold Annually Worldwide - Focus moves from Europe to Asia
While Western Europe and North America are experiencing a slight decline in the window market, Asia records a market growth of 2.4% and Eastern Europe shows an increase in windows units sold of 14.8%. A clear shift in the market potential from the western to the eastern hemisphere can be seen - whereas the total worldwide volume is relatively stable at approximately 500 million window units as the results of a current study from InterConnection Consulting Group show.

Kyro Blames High Value of Euro for Lacklustre Interims
Kyro President and CEO Pentti Yliheljo, in announcing the group's interims, said: 'Our volumes have grown in the glass machine markets of the Far East and America. The strengthening of the euro, however, has reduced growth of net sales and earnings outside Europe. In the EU area, a weak level of investment has also been reflected in the glass machine market'.

First Quarter Results Shine at Safestyle
Safestyle UK, retail supplier of PVCu windows and doors has seen a significant ten percent rise in first quarter results. The Bradford based company is now on target to break the £100 million barrier by the end of the calendar year. Although traditionally one of the quietest periods for the home improvement market, turn over has increased to £24.15 million compared to £21.89 million for the corresponding period in 2003.

Permasteelisa approved on May 13th the First-Quarter Financial Statements for the period to March 31st, 2004. The consolidated value of production amounted to Euro 213.8m with an increase of 3.6% over the corresponding period of the previous year. Alcoa and RUSAL recently announced an agreement in principle under which Alcoa will purchase RUSAL's controlling interests in two fabricating facilities in Samara and Belaya Kalitva in the Russian Federation. Terms of the transaction are not being disclosed at this time. Closing, subject to government approvals, is expected to be completed by June 30th.
