RMC Surfacing has signed a deal with do-it-yourself retailer B&Q to supply its crushed glass product for the construction of new carparks at B&Q warehouses and superstores.

UCATT has expressed its horror at the news that there have been 26 deaths in construction during the three months from 1st April to 30th June

Seventy-one construction workers and five members of the public were killed in the construction industry during 2002/03 - the second lowest annual figure ever recorded. The statistics for the year to 31st March 2002 show a fall from 85 and 113 deaths in 2001/02 and 2000/01 respectively

Wacker
meets growing demand for solar cells by expanding polysilicon production at its Burghausen plant in Germany. Solar-grade silicon capacity will rise to 2,600 metric tons a year from mid-2004. Thanks to a specially modified deposition process, Wacker will supply the photovoltaic industry with exactly the right starting material for solar cells at low cost

A facade that helps improve a building's interior environment and limits its loss of energy is not enough: a building's skin should be a power generator rather than an energy liability.

Within the next few months, the roof of San Francisco's Moscone Convention Centre will be covered with 65,000 sq ft of photovoltaic panels.

Pilkington Sells Aerospace Division to GKN for £42m
Pilkington plc has entered into an Agreement for the sale of the whole of the issued share capital of Pilkington Aerospace Limited and Pilkington Aerospace Inc. to GKN plc at a price of £42 million. The consideration will be paid in cash. Pilkington Group Chief Executive, Stuart Chambers, said. 'This disposal is consistent with our strategy of concentrating on our core Building Products and Automotive businesses and strengthens further the Group's financial position.'

Hunter Douglas Acquires French Blindmakers Filtersun and Goeland
Hunter Douglas has acquired Filtersun and Goeland from Arquati, an Italian company listed on the Milan Stock Exchange. Terms were not disclosed. In May Hunter Douglas acquired three blindmakers from Arquati in Sweden, Switzerland and Spain, and last month acquired Timberblinds, a US manufacturer of window coverings.

At the AGM of Pilkington plc, the Chairman, Sir Nigel Rudd, made the following statement: 'As I said at the time of our results announcement in May, last year we experienced some of the toughest trading conditions for many years. illbruck Acquires Alfas Group Share Capital
illbruck Building Systems GmbH of Leverkusen, Germany, through a UK subsidiary has acquired the entire issued share capital of Alfas Group Limited, the Tyneside and Leicester based manufacturer of sealants, adhesives, security glazing tapes and movement joints. The deal, which was signed in London on 31st July, follows a long term and highly successful co-operation between Alfas Group and illbruck in the UK through a joint venture company, Compriband Limited.

Saint Gobain Group Slips in First Half due to Exchange Rate Losses
Saint-Gobain Group consolidated net income for the first half of 2003 amounted to EUR 470 million, a decrease of 5.6% on the same period of 2002. Net income before profits and losses on sales of non-current assets came to EUR 471 million, down 8.5% on the year-earlier period.

Laird Group Chairman, Nigel Keen, commenting on the results, said: 'Laird has continued to make good progress in the first half of 2003.
