Cowboys at the Frontier of the Online Experience
Every time I receive yet another hoax warning about an internet virus (and 99% of them ARE hoaxes), I despair about the future of our online experience. Today's was a classic. Some of you may well have received it, since it was sent out to some 253 members of the glass and window community by someone on the periphery of our industry. It warned of the perils of a supposed virus which arrives with an attachment called 'Life is Beautiful.ppt', which sounds like it might be a rather nice Powerpoint presentation with some pleasant, life enhancing images, but which apparently then goes on to destroy your computer while displaying messages of mocking hatred.

PVCu systems supplier, Duraflex, has launched a new website.

The reality, of course, is that it does no such thing. All it does is waste everyone's time and cause a certain element of unnecessary fear. If you don't believe me read it here, at the Symantec website (the US Government official site). In fact, I urge all readers to bookmark the Symantec search engine, so that the next time your time is wasted in this way you can have the pleasure of responding with 'Sorry, this is a Hoax' (you can, of course, replace the word 'Sorry' with the exhortation to go forth and multiply).

Since the above put me a bit out of sorts, I thought I would have a close look at our traffic statistics for The Gl@zine, which cheered me up no end. As it turns out, we broke a record in March for the number of Unique Visitors to the website, at a staggering 10,169, the first time we have broken the 10,000 barrier in a single month (and a month in which only four Gl@zines went out). What this shows is that an increasing number of visitors are coming directly to the website, because of our growing reputation on the Search Engines - in parallel to the growing number of subscribers to the Gl@zine email newsletter.

This is hardly surprising, since the weekly email newsletter is for many readers a 'flagging exercise' to remind them that the website has been updated. And the website, of course, contains many features which operate all week round - such as our searchable database 'The Looking Glass', and our extensive archives, which can be accessed either via the Google search engine at the bottom of the page, or via the 19 individual channels which have an Archive entry page (also see below). Naturally, we are all just very glad that so many people are finding the website so useful.
