Will
longer days bring on the 'feel good factor'?
I'm
sure I'm not alone in feeling glad that January is over: the days are
beginning to get longer again and during the day the sun is starting
to offer a bit of warmth (especially if you are sitting in a conservatory!).
However, it does mean that Glassex is less than seven weeks away, so
it's time to stop sitting on the fence if you have yet to commit your
company as an exhibitor, and it's time to pre-register if you are considering
a visit.

BAU
2003, the massive building show in Germany, closed its doors on the
18th January after playing host to 180,000 visitors. Although total
visitor numbers were slightly down, the number of foreign visitors increased
by 9% on the 2001 show.

the deadline now looming for the final publication and subsequent enforcement

The 'feel good factor' which one tends to associate with Glassex is definitely a little late in kicking in this year, not least because of the decision by some big names not to attend. However, there is also a great deal of economic uncertainty in general and this naturally leads to people putting off decisions about spending money to the last minute.
Chances are that come March 23rd, when the doors of the NEC are opened to the 23rd edition of the UK's most important window, door and conservatory show, the old magic will be there in abundance. Finally, I am very pleased to be able to welcome Norman Setra onto The Gl@zine team. Known to a great many of you in the business, Norman began his career in the glass publishing trade with me in 1988 as the Advertisement Manager of Window Trade News, before graduating to Glass and Glazing Products. There, he held the post of Advertisement Manager for many years before leaving to set up Fenestra Journal.
Widely
credited for being the driving force behind the launch and its eventual
move in to the mainstream journals for the glass and glazing industry,
Norman departed from Fenestra just before Christmas. He will in the
first place be responsible for the launch and development of The Gl@zine's
new on-line directory to be launched in two weeks time, but in the near
future will be lending some much needed assistance on the Gl@zine sales

Dear Sir,
Since many many centuries people are accustomed about the use of panel
to close an entry. People decided to set a lock on it in order to block
the entry against intruders. Now the question is: But why we use lock
to block the entry face to intruders but not the panel itself ? Answer
is: Panel has just to penetrate itself in the frame in order to block
the entry!
(This letter is from an inventor in France who claims to have developed
a revolutionary locking device for glazed openings. If anyone can explain
what he is on about, please let me know! -ED)

Sales up to 362.4 million Euro in 2002 - Growth in Weak Market
Group Deceuninck, worldwide producer of PVCu window
systems and building profiles achieved consolidated sales of 362.4
million euro in 2002. This represents an increase of 2.7% compared
with 2001 (353 million euro). Deceuninck operated throughout the whole
year in difficult market conditions. Weak economies in the US and
Europe decreased consumer confidence and therefore spending in new
build and renovation.

Saint-Gobain
Group - 2002 Results
Excluding capital gains, 2002 net income of the
Saint-Gobain Group is estimated to stand at EUR 1,051 million, dipping
(0.6%) compared with 2001. This performance is in line with the objective
set by the Group on July 25th, 2002 to achieve stable net income excluding
capital gains. Excluding both capital gains and the asbestos-related
charge, net income would be up 5.7%.

PPG
Reports on Fourth Quarter
PPG Industries has reported fourth quarter net income
of $94 million, or 55 cents a share, including an aftertax charge
of $4 million, or 2 cents a share, to reflect the increase in value
of PPG stock included in a previously reported asbestos settlement
agreement. Excluding this charge, net income was $98 million, or 57
cents a share. Sales were $1.99 billion.
