Report from the Ministry of the Bleedin' Obvious
Once in a while, consultants give us all a good laugh by producing a report which is just common sense adorned with a few up-to-the minute buzzwords. The latest example of this is a report from a Cambridge think tank which has discovered that some people don't like having to deal with their finances. It's actually now got a name as well - financephobia.

Internet
UK business is making good progress in the e-business arena according to a new report published on 3rd December 2002 by DTI-led UK online for business.

A new report from MBD could also be said to be stating the obvious, when it says that the biggest chunk of the UK Residential Window and Door Market 1998-2002 is windows and window frames (61% of the total market) and PVC-U accounts for 71% of the market. However, sometimes a dose of the obvious is what we all need to get us to see things in their proper perspective. Yes, conservatories are booming, doors are a big growth market, but most of our business still comes from the humble PVC-U replacement window. More on the report here.

Along similar lines, the UK construction market has been enjoying a consistent period of growth, and the usual doom and gloom merchants seem to be hell bent on trying to burst the bubble. However, as I travel around the UK, I only ever see more cranes going up, not fewer. And if we think that the only future boom markets are in China or other far flung places, we have an intersting story here about Ireland's FIRST (!) skyscraper.

So, to summarise, never forget where most of your money comes from, don't miss opportunities at the end of your nose, and if you have got financephobia, hire an accountant.

Differences in Opinion Between FENSA & Local Building Authorities
Dear Sir,
It is good to see, as reported recently (see here - Ed), that FENSA, the GGF and the BBA have agreed on their understanding of fire escape provisions, but as a leading trade fabricator we are frequently asked by our customers about building regulations affecting replacement frames. In the past we have tried to explain the guidelines supplied by FENSA, but are increasingly confused by what appears to be FENSA's conflicting advice to installers.
