A Tale of Two Cities
Well, not cities exactly, but a tale of two countries - the USA and the UK - and a tale of two markets - the conservatory market and the door market. This week we bring you news which shows a UK company bucking the trend by doing very well indeed in the USA, and a major new report which shows that the Door Market in the UK is growing after all.

Vacancies

job vacancies
How do you find good people who are not currently looking for a job?
Anyone in the industry who is good, is probably being cosseted by their employers if they have any sense. Also, they are probably earning a reasonable living from their skills, contented 'for the moment' and probably not actively looking for a job.  Therefore your chances of getting them to read your job-ad in the press are remote, and that is why we call job advertising 'fishing expeditions'.

Ironically, the company which is doing very well in the USA is Ultraframe, a conservatory roof manufacturer. Group sales from continuing operations jumped from £95.7m to £145.2m, of which £54.7m came from the USA, while the UK accounted for £90.5m. UK sales growth was only 3%.

According to a recent Palmer Report, the market for replacement windows is in long term decline, with the installed value now less than half of the total home improvement spend. Conservatories have grown to 38% of the value, but entrance doors are also growing fast, 11% in 2001.

So as we draw near to the Season of Goodwill, we can hopefully draw upon the hope of some cheer in 2003
