Is the New Housing Dam about to Burst?
Hands up who knows why housebuilding starts have outstripped housebuilding completions over the last couple of years? Not that difficult: ever spiralling house prices (and increasing land prices), makes it more attractive for housebuilders to hang on just that bit longer before selling - hoping, as we all do, to sell at the top of the market.

Whether or not you like computers, if you want to develop your career you must have basic IT skills. In today's information and communication conscious economy, not having basic computer skills is like a salesperson not being able drive and not having a mobile. Signs are, however, that the floodgates are about to break, and when house prices level off, we should see a scramble for new development sites to fill the vacuum. And according to a new report from AMA Research, there are real opportunities for the PVC-U window industry to take advantage of this vacuum in several key areas.

For example, and I quote from the AMA Report 'The use of direct supply agreements for doors and windows has been extended within recent years. However, builders merchants remain a very significant supply channel for the housebuilders market'. If that's not an opportunity I don't know what is...

Again, and I quote: 'In the entrance door market, steel and composites have gained further market share mainly at the expense of PVC-U, which is no longer seen as a desirable material for use in this type of application'. Yes, we all know that, but do you know the figures?

Another point: 'The conservatory market in the [replacement] sector has reached record sales levels, however, in the new build market the take-up has remained comparibly slow. The number of housebuilders offering conservatories as an optional extra has remained relatively static'. Another opportunity?.

Another point: 'In the roofline products market it can be seen that there is a gradual change in materials to PVC-U and PVC-UE.... This is an area for enormous future growth as more builders move away from softwood..' Are you gearing up for this change?

The full report - some 110+ pages - is available from AMA Research for £545, and a synopsis is available here.

"Very interesting article regarding the Which? report on sales practices. I run a small independant window/conservatory company and unlike most small companies I aim at the top end of the market. Therefore my prices are similar to Everest - as with anything in life, one gets what one pays for.

The frustrating thing with the national companies is the highly unprofessional way in which they offer a price to a customer and then within 24 hours reduce it in some cases by 50%! How unprofessional is that? (with the exception of Everest who do not under value their products by 'giving' them away)"
