The Return of Esther Rantzen?
A recent national newspaper story described how a double glazing telesales person threatened to kill not only the potential customer, but also his wife and children. Some comfort can be drawn from the fact that a supervisor apparently overheard the abusive call and intervened to apologise, but this did not prevent the householder from contacting the police to seek justice - and compensation.

So is the double glazing industry doing enough to prevent a return of the bad old days when the 'Foot-in-the-Door' aggressive sales techniques of our industry earned us a place on virtually every episode of 'That's Life'. Well, we have the Telephone Preference Service, imposed on all telephone canvassers by Oftel, but what is the industry itself doing about it?

Not surprisingly, the internet seems to be providing some of the best answers - after all, one of the most powerful achievements of the World Wide Web is the empowerment of the consumer.

Nowadays we have more and more online double glazing quoting services, online lead generating schemes, and web based 'Find a Professional' technology. The latest of these involves a collaboration between British Gas and Homepro, more about which you can read below.

I would be very interested to hear readers' comments on
this subject. Please e-mail me at tony@theglazine.com
