Now is the Season of Content?

The glass and window industry was dealt another fair hand in the wake of gloomy manufacturing news this week. As output slumped to a 23 year low in June, fresh pressure was heaped upon the Bank of England to cut interest rates. Low interest rates are always good news for the window business as it encourages the purchase of capital equipment and urges the householder to spend money on home improvements.

Over the last few months some 24 fabrication staff have joined the NVQ training scheme to gain a recognised qualification, and a further 12 have already received their Level 2 certificates from Derby College.

This, combined with the news that house prices are continuing to rise - sources put the figures at as much as 20% per year - should pump more confidence into window makers and installers, as inflationary fears recede. So, the silly season may be upon us, but for the window industry it is the season of content (to misquote the Bard).

Meanwhile, from across the pond comes the good news that Glasstech has emerged from Chapter 11 in good financial health and with the backing of its major customers and suppliers, and PPG has reported reasonable underlying results for Q2, after the high cost of the asbestos settlement is taken into account. With the Dollar recently falling below par against the Euro, our friends in the US need all the good news they can get.

Finally, a timely warning from the DTI about children getting killed or injured by playing on building sites, especially pertinent while the kids are still on summer hols.
