Skills, not services the key to the future

The UK needs 'more plumbers and fewer media students' according to company bosses, as they called for a radical shake-up of state education. The IOD is calling on the Government to scrap its target that 50 per cent of under-30s should go to university by 2010, saying it would be better to equip teenagers with the vocational skills companies need.
As the glass and window industry are continually looking for ways to make their products more sophisticated and user-friendly it surely is a call that should be echoed, substituting "plumbers" for "technicians".

Ruth Lea the IOD’s policy director, in a policy paper, urges ministers to follow examples of some of our European neighbours, and develop distinct academic and vocational "pathways". Under her proposals, some pupils would continue in academic education that would take them on to university, while others would undergo rigorous training in vocational skills.
I, for one, heartily support this move, for if we are to move forward as an industry and forge a better future, we need suitably qualified personnel, both academic and "vocational" that enter the industry at a relatively early age and drive ideas and innovation to the benefit of all.

On a brighter note, news and pictures have reached me via one of the agencies, that Glass Age editor Richard Schwarz and former Glass Age advertisement manager Debbie Sheppard have tied the knot on the Greek island of Spetses. The Gl@zine wishes the pair health and happiness and we look forward to hearing the lurid details of the groom’s stag night!! To view a picture of the happy couple click here.

Official figures from GM Fundraising have put the total amount raised at the Charity Dinner held in Manchester in April as a staggering £66,344.21, with particular thanks going to Ian Harrison of Speedframe and Steve Sutherland of HW Plastics for their auction donations.
