Well, it's not quite as bad as Zimbabwe yet, but costs
are rising quite rapidly (an average of 20%) in the UK home improvement
sector, according to a report issued today by RICS' Building Cost Information
Service (BCIS).

For example, roofing costs have risen by 26%, plumbing and electric work by 22% and painting has risen by 17%, all outstripping inflation over the past two years. Adding double glazing or a conservatory have both seen a 22% rise, according to the report.

I have been reading with interest
letters and comments since the BRE Green Guide
published its environmental ratings. The Green
Guide takes into account 12 factors, from climate
change to toxicity and waste disposal. So for
