Costs Continue to Soar!
Well, it's not quite as bad as Zimbabwe yet, but costs are rising quite rapidly (an average of 20%) in the UK home improvement sector, according to a report issued today by RICS' Building Cost Information Service (BCIS).

Veka Advert

For example, roofing costs have risen by 26%, plumbing and electric work by 22% and painting has risen by 17%, all outstripping inflation over the past two years. Adding double glazing or a conservatory have both seen a 22% rise, according to the report.

New DVD
Meanwhile, the Sustainabilty Debate continues, but is in danger of becoming a PVC versus Timber argument. Such an important issue should not degenerate into tit-for-tat name calling and empty gestures. What we want is some objective truths and - dare I say it - some accurate research?

Ultraframe Advert

Another shocking example of a lack of forward thinking in the industry appears in this month's Roofline Report - still a buoyant (ish) sector but inhabited, it would seem, by a dinosaur element. When asked 'Does your company use the internet, a stunning 9% said 'Never' and a futher 8% said rarely. How do they survive without it? Have they never sent an email? The mind boggles.

Yes, Timber Really is Sustainable
Sam Kennedy's letter in last week's Gl@zine (How Sustainable is Timber Really?) throws up the usual specious and confused arguments from the pvc brigade. (I recognise that probably covers most of your readers. I always was a sucker for a scrap). Keith J. Nurcombe. Director, SupaWOOD Windows

Let's Set out the Facts and Arguments Properly
You put your finger on the key issue regarding the debate over the environmental credentials of the various window materials when you wrote 'it is not just about the merits of one material versus another. By properly addressing the environmental impact (or benefits!) of its products the entire window industry will gain from increased consumer confidence and respect from the wider construction community.' Richard Lambert, Chief Executive British Woodworking Federation

A-Rating is Much More than Recycling
I have been reading with interest letters and comments since the BRE Green Guide published its environmental ratings. The Green Guide takes into account 12 factors, from climate change to toxicity and waste disposal. So for Roy Wakeman (The Gl@zine, 20th May) to claim that PVC-U achieved an A rating on the sole basis that more windows are being recycled is nonsense! Alan Burgess, MD, Masterframe Windows

Cowboy Builders
Re. Stopping Cowboy Builders & Rogue Traders (Glazine News, 20th May) - would not Garath Thomas have been better addressing MPs on a reduction in vat on energy rated windows and home improvements rather than yet another scheme which increases our overheads.
