Budget Disappoints
Another budget and another missed opportunity for the government to stimulate the double glazing sector by reducing VAT to 5%. Our campaign - with Edgetech to achieve a VAT reduction, continues however, as does Synseal's Nick Dutton's efforts in getting Geoff Hoon on board. We shall prevail!

Veka Advert

However, it seems that, if anything, the government is up to its old trick of trying to squeeze the tax-dodging cash economy still inherent in the building and construction trades by regulating it still further - a shake-up to the building control system proposed by Housing Minister Caroline Flint 'which cracks down on illegal construction' was announced yesterday.

Globar Door

Also in the news this week: Shepley returns with its former management team; Veka enters the composite residential door market with Amulet, WHS Halo's Winston Duguid warns that it is time for UK window companies to 're-appraise and re-evaluate their business models' and Windowbase advises that 'While the Olympics offers a welcome boost for the window industry, fabricators need to be alert to other opportunities.'

Windows Miss out on VAT Reduction
Surprise surprise. Another budget and lower rate VAT on windows didn't make the grade. The window industry has been overlooked again by the Chancellor. It's not for lack of trying. But despite the petition and other efforts we've had no results so far. Nick Dutton Marketing Director, Synseal

Echo Warrior
It's not often that industry competitors publicly pledge support for each other, but I felt strongly about adding support to Jim Rawson's article in last week's Gl@zine. He is absolutely right in pointing out the potential long term cost of Eco-Disinformation as PVC continues its perceived role as timber's poor cousin. Tony Crutcher, Sales and Marketing Director, Latium Building Products
