Towards Zero Carbon Homes
With the glass and glazing industry well above average in its environmental credibility, there should be some joy in the market at this week's news that all new homes are to be rated on their green credentials from May 1st, with a commitment to all new housing being zero carbon from 2016.

Ideally, the industry should be able to trade up with energy products and get higher margins, but unfortunately there will always be the turnover driven companies who are more than happy to give them away just to get business.

Also looming is the requirment for Energy Performance Certificates: non-domestic buildings will need an EPC when they are built, sold or leased, with the largest buildings requiring one from April and the rest by October.

Pilkington Glass, meanwhile, continues to do its bit for sustainability by promoting its self cleaning glass Activ on mainstream TV with another series of witty commercials. The company also recently hosted its inaugural EnergiSummit Question Time at the Glazier’s Hall in London, which proved a lively discussion on how to address the sustainable housing challenge.
