Keeping Financial Control
The final repercussions of the recent Latium deal will obviously take a while to surface but while it is inevitable that there will be rationalisation involving job losses and building closures, surely this is a fact of life in the double glazing market of 2008.

Veka Advert
The press releases, emails and blogs received by The Gl@zine this week demonstrate the differences of opinion that still exist within the industry - not about the kind of year we are going to have, but how to deal with it. It's going to be difficult for many companies to remain profitable with the effects of years of price cutting finally coming home to roost in a market now stretched to breaking point.

Global Doors

There is little excuse for not knowing where the profit is in your business, with software systems such as Profitmaker on the market for some years. This week we report on the latest initiatives from Ab Initio and Sales-i designed to keep tight control of your company's sales and accounts (see News). In a similar vein, K2 fabricator, Four Seasons Conservatories has launched an all-singing all-dancing roof quoting system which should help companies keep their game tight (see Product of the Week)

Ultraframe Advert

Finally, there are a few companies who appear to be saying 'Bring it on': on the Blog we have some stern words from Dave Ruzicka at Sash, while Listers Sales Director Phil Warren welcomes the challenge of 2008 with relish. EAG Director Ed Whipp reckons it's boomtime for the commercial market, Selecta is investing £3m to consolidate its growth plans, and we also hear of expansion at Universal Arches under new owners Clair Ridley and Leon Day.

WHAT'S ON THE BLOG...

A Word Of Warning From Sash - Buyers Beware!
The New Year is a time for forward planning and a fresh start for all, but as anticipated 2008 was forecast to be a turbulent time for the window industry, and true to form those companies ignoring the warning signs have finally fallen prey to the harsh market conditions faced by all. Dave Ruzicka, Joint Managing Director, Sash UK

Door Energy Ratings
As the UK's leading composite door manufacturer, we are delighted to learn that a Door Energy Ratings scheme is to be introduced next year. Such a scheme can only have a positive impact on the door industry. You only have to look at the introduction of Window Energy Ratings (WERs) to see what a success they have been. - Mark Simm, Sales Director, Rockdoor

GGF Information 'Dated'
I am writing in response to the GGF's analysis of the Government's views on Building Regulations in 2010 and 2013 [see here]. Weatherseal 'Gets the Cream'
I think the letter [in last weeks Gl@zine] about Weatherseal taking over Zenith is a bit misleading. I work for one of the big boys based in Norwich (Anglian) and you haven't mentioned the 200 production line workers who are out of work and haven't been paid and unlikely to get any redundancy for months, plus the 1100 fitters and foot canvassers plus the office staff. All Weatherseal have done is taken the cream ie the £9m order book. David London

PILKINGTON FANTASY FOOTBALL

Real Ballax And Ronaldo Are Stars Of The Weekend
Premier League action returned this weekend full of speculation following Newcastle’s dismissal of Sam Allardyce. Perhaps the Toon should look to poach a new boss from the top of the Pilkington Fantasy Football League, like the manager of new leaders Real Ballax, who are being closely pursued by Rafas Great Goatie and Saffys Springers. In the league of leagues the top two remain the same, with Isaacs Leeds the Way in first place ahead of The Firing Line.
