Silly Season now in December!
One thing becoming more apparent every year is that the so-called silly season - a newspaper term to describe the lack of sensible stories in the summer recess - is being steadily matched by the craziness that is Christmas. Not that we are short of top news stories, but there seems to be quite a bit of silliness about too.

Veka Advert
One thing we found out this week is that police are now armed with detector kits ready to test the blacked out windows of your limo, to test whether they exceed the limits of glass tinting allowable in motor vehicles. Man Utd star Cristiano Ronaldo was given a spot fine of £30 when pulled over and found to have a tint problem in the windows of his Bentley convertible. In case you are wondering, the fine represented a whopping 0.02% of the value of his £140,000 car.

Doors

Another thing we learned this week was that total emissions of all the delegates travelling to Bali for the Climate Summit (hey, why have a climate summit anywhere other than a tropical paradise thouands of miles from anywhere?) was the equivalent of the annual emissions of 20,000 cars. It wouldn't have been so bad if they'd enjoyed their jolly, but from what I saw, many of them fled in tears!

Ending the Year on a High Note for the VAT Campaign
Without wanting to throw caution to the wind in a state of over enthusiasm, I think our VAT campaign may be getting somewhere! We've attached the letter , signed personally by Tim Yeo for Gl@zine readers (download PDF here). Andy Jones, Edgetech

Consumer Confidence: Let's Stop Talking Things Down
If you go by newspaper headlines and economists' views on TV and Radio, the economy is in trouble and we are in for a battering in 2008... But let's ease off the gloom and not talk ourselves into a self induced, window recession. The Bank of England has just cut interest rates, and we can look forward to rates falling to 5% or less by mid 2008: - Duncan Douglas, Sales & Marketing Director, Spectus Window Systems

Christmas Cheer for the Industry
The January 2008 edition of 'Which' landed on my desk this week as I prepared for a final hectic week of meetings with Members before the Christmas break. Taking a few moments to scan through it, I was heartened to read in an article about reputable tradesmen that consumers said they were less likely to have a problem with glaziers than other trades such as kitchen and bathroom fitters or builders, indeed 63% of consumers spoken to by the magazine were very satisfied with services provided by glaziers - Nigel Rees, GGF Chief Executive
