Vitrum Proves a Bigger Hit!
Having just received the final report from the organisers of Vitrum 2007, which was held in a brand new venue outside Milan (Rho) for the first time this year, two things immediately come to mind. The first of these is that it proves the doubters wrong about the numbers - all metrics are comfortably up on the last outing of the exhibition in 2005 - visitors up nearly 7%, stand space up 10.5%, exhibitor numbers up 32%. Visitor numbers were the highest since the show began in 1979 (just over 17,000)

Veka Advert
Perhaps those commentators who thought numbers were down were confused by the larger scale of the new halls - or perhaps by the copious amounts of wine consumed! We also hear this week that numbers were up at the huge plastics show K in Düsseldorf at the end of October (visitors up nearly 5% on the last show in 2004 - and yes folks it's only every three years!!)

Doors

It also makes you wish that UK exhibition organisers were as transparent as the Germans and Italians about their data. Vitrum, for example, sends out a complete breakdown of visitor and exhibitor figures, in table form, from 1979 to the present With another European behemoth - Fensterbau - on the horizon, it is really time for UK organisers to take a leaf out of the continentals' books, and start putting on decent shows. People might turn up to them if they did.

Darby Glass: A Correction: The comments we made in the last issue of The Gl@zine in addition to the Darby Glass press release - which we ran verbatim - were not intended to misrepresent what the directors have achieved with Darby Glass. The leader comment was meant to be provocative and slightly tongue in cheek but we appreciate that the flippant tone was unnecessary and could be viewed as misleading. It was certainly not our intention to place any negative inference in what has been achieved at Darby Glass. We would also like to reiterate that at no point has Darby Group or Darby Glass been in administration.

Sloppy Journalism Gives Industry a Bad Name
They say any publicity is good publicity, but while I support the exposure the national media gives to con men and rogue traders I don’t support sloppy journalism in the ‘red top’ tabloids or anywhere.

Industry Debate - New Comment
• I am surprised that those once removed from the 'window market' do not seem to understand how it works. Anyone who thinks that the solution is to train Direct Salesmen lives on a different planet to me! Inevitably we will have to compete at a price level for some of our business but we will be rewarded by the inevitable demise of the 'kamikaze pilots' - it's just a question of how long. I wish I knew the answer to that one! - David Hurst, Divisional Managing Director, Epwin Group
