Solar Control Glass Could Save the Planet!
Well, that's not quite the claim of a major new study by industry association Glass for Europe, but in presenting its findings at a conference yesterday, it was claimed that the correct application of solar control glass could cut C02 emissions in Europe by between 15 and 80 million tonnes per annum, enough for governments to take note, surely?

Rick Wilberforce of Pilkington called this opportunity 'the low-hanging fruit' and encouraged policy makers to pluck it: 'We are all aware of the urgency of fighting climate change. Here is an opportunity to make a major contribution in the building sector.'

Darby Glass: A Correction: The comments we made in the last issue of The Gl@zine in addition to the Darby Glass press release - which we ran verbatim - were not intended to misrepresent what the directors have achieved with Darby Glass. The leader comment was meant to be provocative and slightly tongue in cheek but we appreciate that the flippant tone was unnecessary and could be viewed as misleading. It was certainly not our intention to place any negative inference in what has been achieved at Darby Glass. We would also like to reiterate that at no point has Darby Group or Darby Glass been in administration.

Another classic from the 'Ministry of the Bleedin Obvious' this week: The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) warns hospitals that they have a duty to ensure the safety of patients from falls from windows. Admittedly, the warning follows HSE's prosecution of Stockport NHS Foundation Trust after a patient was injured when he climbed out of a window, so it's clearly not as obvious as I thought. Might be worth a check call to your local hospital though, to offer a 'free security and safety health check' on their windows..

• STOP PRESS... As we 'go to press' this morning, we learn that Steve Stewart has thrown his weight (and money) behind the latest Avocet management team. More on this below!

Greener Homes MOT Scheme
I noticed this with interest [in last week's Glazine Leader comment]
'The much hyped Green Homes 'MOT' Scheme was finally announced at the beginning of this week, but - surprise, surprise - there is yet again no specific mention of double glazing, although the old stalwarts loft insulation and cavity wall insulation are trotted out, as if there is a house standing in this country that doesn't already have both'. Actually many thousands of houses do not have both, in fact it is impossible for them so to do.
' Malcolm Jennings Dip GAI, Product Development Director, Frank Allart & Company Ltd

Industry Debate - New Comment
• I am surprised that those once removed from the 'window market' do not seem to understand how it works. Anyone who thinks that the solution is to train Direct Salesmen lives on a different planet to me! Inevitably we will have to compete at a price level for some of our business but we will be rewarded by the inevitable demise of the 'kamikaze pilots' - it's just a question of how long. I wish I knew the answer to that one! - David Hurst, Divisional Managing Director, Epwin Group
