Relatively Sustainable
Last week, the timber window industry started to roar after years of relative acquiescence to the rise and rise of PVC-U. This week it's all about aluminium as the entire industry appears to be becoming a conglomerate, or rather, be snapped up by the ever more powerful mining industry. The stakes are high in both markets, with raw material costs at an all time high as global demand outpaces diminishing resources.

Veka Advert
The hostile bid by Alcoa for Alcan has been derailed by a much better ($38.1bn) cash offer from Rio Tinto. This has left Alcoa itself vulnerable to a takeover bid, with speculation rife that Anglo-Australian mining giant BHP Billiton is moving into position to attack. As we go to press, however, Alcoa's shares have plummeted on reports that the BHP bid will not materialise. Watch this space, as they say...

CWG A rating

On the sustainability front, meanwhile, Spectus has produced an excellent leaflet outlining the case for PVC-U in general (and not just Spectus - very admirable!). It is available for download as a PDF - but think before you print it out, as you will probably use up an entire ink cartridge in the process, which you will then have to offset by planting a forest of trees on your lawn. Read the article under Brochures.
