Alcoa Makes Hostile Bid for Alcan
Big news this week from the aluminium fenestration market, with two years of fruitless merger discussions between Alcoa and Alcan finally giving way to a fairly hostile bid. Alcoa has offered Alcan shareholders a cash/share offer which values the company at around $33bn.

Veka Advert
Alcan has predictably advised shareholders to hold fire, and the competition commissions across several continents are swinging into action. The merger talks apparently stalled after the CEOs of both companies, Richard Evans and Alain Beldas could not agree over who would get the top job, according to this morning's Montreal Gazette.

Win a TV with Synseal

Ironically, the proposed merger would recreate an aluminium giant which was dismantled nearly 80 years ago by anti-trust regulators, who this time around may prefer another bidder to enter the fray, possibly from China or Russia. It's likely to be a rocky ride, despite the Toronto stock index reaching record highs on the announcement.

In the UK, meanwhile, another combination of materials has achieved the Holy Grail - the affordable A-rated window. Spectus has collaborated with Pilkington to develop a system using 4mm Pilkington K Glass, 4mm Pilkington Optiwhite, a 20mm warmedge spacerbar, and filled with argon gas. The profiles are Spectus Elite 63mm which achieve zero air leakage.

Edgetech Super Spacer

Finally, HomePro - one of the UK's leading providers of Insurance Backed Guarantees (IBGs) - has launched a new business, HomePro Money, to provide trade professionals with finance packages which are free from risk or exposure - improve 'control' of sales, deal 'closures', cash flow; and sales and profit values. More about this below.
