A Crisis of Confidence?
Just over a year ago, in The Glazine of 21st February 2006, we said:
'If there is one thing increasingly staring us all in the face, it is the importance of service and delivery in a market which has reached a plateau in terms of product differentiation. The best product at the best price is of no use to a customer if it's a day late.
'Late delivery and missing parts played a part in the recent problems at Planet, which it says it has solved now. In today's issue we report on the OFT's censure of St Helens Glass, which points to a catalogue of failed or inadequate deliveries.'

Veka Advert

With the news last week that this 37 year old company - part of the Latium Group since 2001 - has hit the skids, with the loss of 275 jobs, questions are being asked about the role of the OFT in bringing about a loss of confidence in the company, and failing to help stem its recent demise.
After the two year enquiry by the OFT into the company, St Helens Glass was running up crippling annual losses of more than £3 million before it collapsed, with confidence amongst consumers in the company at an all time low.

Synseal Billboard

However, the role of owner Brian Kennedy must also be called into question, with comments from him suggesting that he had little to do with the day-to-day running of the company at the same time as regretting the loss of his investment in the company. Directors and staff at some of the more recent Latium acquisitions will surely be looking for a more hands-on approach from Mr Kennedy in the light of this failure.

Ultraframe Advert

The announcement that Laird Security Systems (LSS) is being sold off raises an interesting spectre: in the shape of Greg Hutchings, the man behind buyer Lupus Holdings. Mr Hutchings was the empire builder behind 'guns and buns' conglomerate Tomkins in the 1980s and already owns Schlegel, which makes for an interesting fit with LSS. Watch this space, as they say....

Finally, we have a new Glassex Review section below, with a number of additional companies reporting on how their Glassex was for them - and by and large it seems to have paid off for most. If you have not yet submitted your Glassex experiences, please do so to news@theglazine.com.
