Glassex Back with a Bang
In a presentation to the trade press recently, the organiser of Glassex and GP&T (and Interbuild, and the plastics show PDM for that matter), put its cards on the table. It had become too arrogant with its customers and too distant from the industry it serves. But, with new management on board, it's all change and the new team is all ears.

Veka Advert
After a series of consultations with the industry, a number of changes have been implemented, which we cover in more detail below. One of the more significant changes, is that Glassex and GP&T will be sharing dates again in 2008, with both shows moving to early April. The next Interbuild is scheduled for the end of October 2007.

Synseal New Tool

Interestingly, we have a letter from Dave Jennings of UAP, with some reservations about Glassex which may well be answered by some of the new initiatives. Other letters this week include one from Roger Benton of Hoppe about the need for companies to pass on the rise in raw material costs to their customers, and a copy of a letter from Andy Jones of Edgetech in his continuing wrangles with government departments, this week it's the VAT Office!

Our glasstec 06 preview is growing, with a selection of well known names out of the 1200 plus exhibitors, and most of the 70 or so UK and Irish companies who you will find at the Düsseldorf glass show in October, which can be accessed from the Exhibitor List

PILKINGTON FANTASY FOOTBALL

International Weekend Brings Despair To Premiership Players
It was a quiet weekend in the Pilkington Fantasy Football League thanks to the Euro 2008 qualifiers. The home nations had a mixed Saturday, Northern Ireland drew, Wales got hammered at home to Slovakia and England fought out a 0-0 draw against minnows Macedonia. The Republic of Ireland also crashed to an embarrassing defeat away in Cyprus. But biggest surprise of the weekend was Scotland’s 1-0 win against Patrick Viera and France.

Sitting on the Fence
We are still sitting on the fence regarding both Glassex and GP&T. We, like many, are unsure of the investment required versus the likely benefit to be gained. We would exhibit at both Glassex and GP&T if the proposal from yourselves was right. However to date the cost is high and the perceived benefits are far outweighed by the fixed, guaranteed cost.

Passing it On
China's economy grew by 11.3% year on year in the second quarter of this year. This phenomenal growth is absorbing a very large portion of the world's supply of aluminium, copper and zinc. India, Brazil and Mexico are also growing fast. World demand for these metals is expected to remain higher than supply for the foreseeable future. The implications are serious for our industry.
