Things Look Better Across the Pond

They might not be able to play football, but it appears that some things are going right for our cousins across the pond. Ultraframe's interim results make pretty dire reading (look at the cost of sales!), the only glimmer of light being the 6.6% increase in dollar sales (as against the nearly 20% decline in the UK). No more bids have come in this week anyway, so it looks like Latium is home and dry.

The US based National Glass Association has been very busy lately. Always somewhat more dynamic and wide ranging in its scope than many trade associations across the globe (the NGA publishes magazines and puts on exhibitions, runs seminars etc), the NGA has recently negotiated insurance deals for its members, and this week we learn that it has negotiated a 25% discount for members with DHL. On top of that the NGA has introduced, this week, a pioneering web based learning programme called 'MyGlassClass.com' (see Internet section in left side column).

It all reminds me of those great lyrics in West Side Story: 'I like the shores of America! / Comfort is yours in America! / Knobs on the doors in America / Wall-to-wall floors in America!'

Seriously though, the NGA is clearly doing a fantastic job not just for its members, but also for the future of the glass industry in the US.

At the end of last week we were delighted to be present at the opening of Combilift's new €10m international headquarters in Monaghan, Ireland. A former hotspot in border country, with Enniskillen just up the road, this area has blossomed in recent years, not least through the hard work and entrepreneurship of companies like Combilift, which now dominates the global long-load handling market.

Offically opened by Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Micheal Martin TD, Martin McVicar, Managing Director of Combilift attributes the company's success to a strong link between research, product development and exports, creating innovative products that customers need. ‘We maintain a very close link between research and development and marketing so the two functions are always connected. This means everything we do is driven by our customers' needs and we're always first to market with what we're offering.
