Mellon Wades in to Ultraframe Bid

Another interesting week for Ultraframe, whose shares shot up to 34p on the speculation that another offer was forthcoming (as reported in last week's Glazine). The rise in the share price suggests that the Latium bid may have undervalued Ultraframe quite considerably, indeed, one of the major shareholders, Mellon (which owns 11.65% of Ultraframe) has issued a statement rejecting the Latium offer, suggesting a recapitalisation proposal in its place.

The share price dropped as the week progressed, with the Americans yet to come in with a firm offer, and they apparently have until the end of today to do so.

Describing the week's events as 'an emotional roller-coaster,' Ultraframe founder John Lancaster said they had looked at proposals from around 80 interested parties and said: 'I only want to do the best for everyone. The business is dear to me. It's very difficult due to the present trading of the company'.

Interestingly, Ultraframe features this week as our Product of the Week, with its enhanced version of Elevation (which featured as a Product of the Week when it was first launched in September 2004). Having been very impressed with the second generation product at this year's Glassex, we are pleased to run it again as our Product of the Week. We still find it very suprising that this product has not enjoyed more mainstream success, especially with housebuilders, given the clever way it provides extra space.

This week we look ahead to October, for the 19th edition of the world's biggest glass exhibition, Glasstec in Düsseldorf, Germany. The event was launched in style, at an agreeable lunch in Nobu Docklands, with Project Director Marianne Ingenhoven providing an interesting insight into the international glass market, and Professor Stefan Behling, a Senior Partner at Fosters, outlining some of the cutting edge issues which will be covered in Glass Technology Live, the special symposium which nowadays runs alongside the exhibition. More on this next week.

Synseal Flies the FlagWe have a number of World Cup related events and offers around this week: Advantage is offering a beer promotion, more about that below. Clayton Glass is also offering free beer (more about that under Marketing). Finally, to show its support for the England team to bring home the World Cup after 40 years, Synseal has taken down the Synseal banners from outside its base in Huthwaite and replaced them with five George Cross flags for the duration of the World Cup (see picture right)
