Ultraframe White Knight to Emerge?

As predicted in last week's Gl@zine, the Latium bid for Ultraframe is not a done deal, having only secured 35.8% of the share capital of the struggling conservatory roof maker (albeit with the recommendation of its board and founder).

It has now emerged that US based Resilience Capital Partners LLC and Berggruen Holdings 'are considering making an offer for the entire share capital of Ultraframe Plc but that there can be no certainty that an offer will be forthcoming'.

There has been speculation that disgruntled investors who had paid over £2 per share were unwilling to see their investment sold off as low as 30p; it had also seemed likely that at least one bidder would try to split off the US division as the most profitable part of the group.

The latest statement certainly suggests that the story isn't over yet.

Meanwhile, we have no fewer than two emails this week from a man who is clearly on a roll after masterminding the recent Energy Conference, Edgetech UK sales director and general manager Andy Jones. The first of these refers to the recent Corporate Leaders' Group on Climate Change, banging the drum, as usual, for the double glazing market, and in particular the Window Energy Rating scheme.

There is no doubt the glazing industry should be immensely proud of the WER scheme, with hardly anyone bothering to go for the lower classifications and a surprising number of A ratings already achieved - even, amazingly quickly, one from the aluminium market! (eek!)

The Engineering Employers' Federation, however, see this whole climate change nonsense as merely a cost burden on manufacturers already strapped for cash, and its director-general Martin Temple helpfully suggests that the UK 'may well become the greenest place on Earth, but without the wealth to enjoy it'. (He probably also thinks Trinidad will beat England this Thursday...)

I look forward to hearing Andy's response to Mr Temple's comments, but in the meantime, let us suffice with this week's top soundbite: 'Ratings don't cost the earth'. Well said, Andy!

Oh, and finally, in case you were wondering, Freefoam bought Permacell, and NSG's bid for Pilkington now has all the necessary regulatory approvals. Yawn...

Ratings that Don't Cost the Earth
Last week the Corporate Leaders' Group on Climate Change, comprising 14 top UK companies, including Shell, Vodafone and Tesco lobbied the Prime Minister to set tougher targets for greenhouse gas emissions as part of their proposals to make a difference and help slow global warming. They plan to encourage the use and development of innovative products and are lobbying the Government to support their initiative.

Working at Height not a Problem for WER
The Glazine of 30th May carried a letter from Jeff Crowder, director of Harnser Systems Ltd, entitled 'BFRC Ratings a Risk from De-Glazing on Site'. I have not seen the company's product but it seems to be a welcome development for installers. However, Mr Crowder's argument that the need to install fully assembled windows, complete with sealed units, is becoming even more vital because of the drive to higher performance A rated windows, is spurious.
