Jumping the Gun?

If it comes off, Latium's bid for Ultraframe at 30p a share will surely be one of the most audacious and opportune moves not just in the history of the conservatory roof market, but also in the wider glass and glazing market, certainly since Brian Kennedy snapped up Everest some six years ago.

However, it is as well to inject a note of caution, since rumours are currently flying about which suggest a 'White Knight' suitor may yet emerge with a better offer. Latium has only secured options on 35.8% of the share capital.

The deal, if accepted (and it has the backing of the Ultraframe board and its founder John Lancaster), will see Ultraframe being restructured both in the UK and the USA. One of the more interesting prospects will be the opportunity to explore the synergies between Ultraframe and Wendland, which might see the latter receiving a boost to its patient if rather plodding market penetration.

Somewhat overshadowed by the Latium offer, but no less important to the future of the glazing industry, is the announcement this week that the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) has merged its operations with that of the Glass & Glazing Federation (GGF).

This is the latest chapter in what has been the rocky, but ultimately triumphant history of Window Energy Ratings in the UK glazing market, and is a testament to the hard work and dedication of Kevin Cubbage and Dr Robin Kent.

'The new British Fenestration Rating Council Ltd will be managed by the GGF and this will enable increased marketing, technical and administrative support for the future growth of Window Energy Rating and the possibility of its integration into both the Building Regulations approvals systems operated by FENSA and other GGF operations', the GGF says.
