Glassmakers Up, PVC Still Down

Some significant industry metrics are made public this week, which give a snapshot of the current financial state of the market. At its AGM last week, Heywood Williams' chairman gave a bullish trading update which reflects the feeling of 'job done' after two fairly painful years of restructuring.

Although conventional wisdom has it that an ill wind blows no-one any good, it's certainly done Heywood's LaSalle Bristol division no harm as it works flat out to supply mobile homes to hurricane hit areas of the US.

At the same time, Saint-Gobain has reported sales up by nearly 28% in the first quarter of this year, mainly due to the BPB acquisition, but also from increased sales in emerging markets. The UK showed 'moderate growth' and group flat glass volumes rose 6.6%.

PPG has reported an all-time, quarterly sales record for the 12th consecutive quarter, although glass sales were only up 2%, while speciality glass maker Schott projects a double-digit increase in both sales and profitability for the current fiscal year.

What a Difference a Report Makes
Your leader article on 18th April pointed to the big difference in calculations of the conservatory market size, which 'differ to the tune of nearly 100,000 installations' in different reports. Our report 'UK Conservatory Report 2005' includes Northern Ireland and new housing, which I believe others don't, but that still leaves a sizeable difference. We report that the market fell 8% in 2005 to 282,000, from 306,000 installations in 2004.
