Other US groups - such as Masco - are also buying into the action by acquiring UK companies (Avocet Hardware and Griffin Windows so far, with another major window industry player to be announced later this week).

which is expected to see most growth over the next 2-5 years. While continental
European markets remain weak (and we have a very interesting report on
the German window market in this issue), the UK construction market -
both commercial and residential continues to grow.
For this reason, Interbuild 2002 is rapidly becoming the place to be.
Already host to the cream of the UK construction industry, and with many
international companies also vying for space, we learn this week that
even more major players have signed up. Promac, the UK's largest supplier
of German and Italian window fabrication machinery; the Italian company
Savio, one of the world's largest hardware manufacturers and UK window
and door sealing specialists Reddiplex Group have all added their weight
to the show.

Industries Announces £100 Million Investment in Yorkshire:
Guardian Industries Corp, one of the world's largest glassmakers, is to
create more than 300 manufacturing jobs in Yorkshire with Government assistance
Minister for Employment Relations and the Regions Alan Johnson announced
yesterday. Aided by £4.9m Regional Selective Assistance (RSA) from
the DTI and £2.7m from the regional development agency, Yorkshire
Forward, the US-based firm will invest £115m in a new factory in
Goole.

Fails to Impress Construction Products Industry
After successive increases in previous budgets, the Construction Products
Association has argued strongly that the burden on the construction products
industry should not be increased. Commenting on the Budget, Chief Executive
Michael Ankers said: 'Whilst some additional tax increases were inevitable
to fund the planned increases in investment in public services, the Chancellor
has once again put an additional burden on business. The 1% increase in
employers' NIC is particularly unwelcome as it acts as a tax on jobs.

to Rise
2001 has been the worst turnover year for the German window market in
over 10 years; since the absolute peak in 1995, with over 26 million units
sold, the market has continuously declined; 2001 brought another decrease
in volume of -12.8% to about 18.5 million units, as the latest report
by the consultants of InterConnection shows.

Viridor Waste Management Ltd, a subsidiary of the Pennon Group - which
posted a £534m turnover in 2001 - has acquired Richardson Limited,

of the 36 year-old second-generation family business based in St Helens
