Service is Now Paramount

If there is one thing increasingly staring us all in the face, it is the importance of service and delivery in a market which has reached a plateau in terms of product differentiation. The best product at the best price is of no use to a customer if it's a day late. And with ever busier roads and freight networks, and ever more sourcing from the other side of the globe, logistics is the biggest challenge of today's business community.

Late delivery and missing parts played a part in the recent problems at Planet, which it says it has solved now. In today's issue we report on the OFT's censure of St Helens Glass, which points to a catalogue of failed or inadequate deliveries. The OFT would love to nail someone in the double glazing market with an Enforcement Order, having already jailed kitchen retailer Vance Miller following its first ever 'Stop Now Order' in 2003.

However, we also have a number of success stories in today's issue of The Gl@zine, where companies have got the cash and the good sense to invest at this end of the business - from warehousing, through to ordering efficiency (one company now offers a text/SMS alternative) and delivery methods, whether with your own wagons or via a third party freight company.

There is one other area of differentiation which hasn't become tired and 'me-too', and that is marketing. Below the line stuff like customer days out (check out Glazekart at Glassex, for example) still has all sorts of avenues to explore, and Awards are still a good marketing tool (our own G06 Awards, for example).

However, the internet still remains largely unexploited by industry in general, although the glass and glazing industry is ahead of most.

Synseal Steel

While not wishing to blow our own trumpet too much, The Gl@zine remains at the cutting edge of B2B internet marketing and only last week we delivered a record number of visits to Synseal's website following our coverage of its new 'steel cut for free' campaign.

We have a report from internet specialists Zendor this week which confirms that the only way is up in terms of selling on the web, mainly due to the growing take-up of broadband. Companies who are not offering some kind of direct commerce or ordering capability from their sites are definitely missing out.

GLASSEX 2006

Our Glassex Preview continues to grow. This week we have exclusive details of some of the winners of the Glassex Conservatory Design Competition, which is carried out as a collaboration between Glassex and Ultraframe, but nowadays actually includes some non-Ultraframe roofs. Very big of them, I think. Those pictured here are Town & Country and Cowie & Roberts.

Meanwhile, the following new companies have signed up as Glassex Exhibitors in the last few days: Advance Systems; Astra; BKV; CW-UK Conservatories; Corporatewear UK; Datum Tools; Derby College; Easi-Dec Access; Flaire Plastic Products; Glasstech Asia; In Your Face Marketing; Merlin Lazer; MTS Fentec; Mul-T-Lock UK; Phoenix Composite Doors; R.G. Wales; Red Horse; Sunflex UK; Thermaseal Window Systems; Unitec Hardware; United Trade Frames.

We now have full editorial on the stand presentations of over 70 companies, the fully updated Exhibitor List (with over 20 new exhibitors listed) full details on the excellent Seminar Programme, which has been changed in the past few weeks.

Glassex Exhibitors: don't forget, The Gl@zine will be publishing right up until the first day of the show, with a special Glassex Show Issue on Monday 6th, plus our normal issue on Tuesday the 7th, so let us have details of your last minute or surprise stand presentations.
