Two third quarter financial reports this week show clearly that there are some highly profitable pockets in our market: notably window coverings and hardware. Hunter Douglas reports profits up 23% on last year, while Assa Abloy's profits - mainly from Europe - were up 5%. Both companies have been on the acquisition trail recently. |

In uncertain times, companies should be able to look to their trade associations to provide some direction, and sure enough, we find the British Plastics Federation organising a seminar entitled 'Plastics, the Industry of Tomorrow', scheduled for December 8th in Loughborough. The National Federation of Builders, meanwhile, has established a special interest group for its beleaguered housebuilder members, called The Housebuilders Association.
