Pilkington Shareholders Prepared to Sit it Out

It looks like Nippon Sheet Glass will have a fight on its hands after all, with Pilkington announcing that the 150p per share offer fell materially short of something it could recommend; most analysts suggesting that a more realistic price lies somewhere between 160 and 180 and Pilkington's biggest shareolders announcing that they were prepared to dig their heels in. One wonders at what point NSG will walk away, although it seems unlikely that the company could underestimate Pilkington, since the two companies have worked closely with each other for years. Pilkington's interim results - which show a 22% increase in pre-tax profits - will also bolster St Helens' defences.
