Those readers old enough to remember the hostile (and failed) bid for Pilkington from BTR in 1986/7 will no doubt also remember how the loyal citizens of St Helens took to the streets to prevent the glass maker from falling into the hands of an acquisitive conglomerate. The prospect of being taken over by a fellow glassmaker - albeit one from the Far East - may be more palatable to the local workforce, more so when one considers that NSG has had a technology sharing agreement with Pilkington since 1987, so the companies know each other well. |

combined NSG/Pilkington would seriously rival Asahi as the world's biggest
glassmaker and is probably the only big move possible among the major
glassmakers without upsetting the competition authorities. It will also
provide some long awaited relief for thousands of Pilkington employees
(and ex-employees) who have hung on to their shares in the hope of a

VEKA fabricator, Piper Double Glazing Ltd has achieved a prestigious A rating in the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) Window Energy Rating system, the only window so far to achieve this.
