Nippon Sheet Glass Moves on Pilkington

So after years of speculation, with inexplicable spikes in the Pilkington share price being played down again and again, Nippon Sheet Glass (NSG), which has owned 20% of the UK glassmaker since 2001, has finally shown its hand in what is described as a 'friendly' bid. The shares shot up 26% on the announcement, which puts a value of around £2bn on the offer, no problem for a profitable NSG with large cash reserves.

Veka Advert

Those readers old enough to remember the hostile (and failed) bid for Pilkington from BTR in 1986/7 will no doubt also remember how the loyal citizens of St Helens took to the streets to prevent the glass maker from falling into the hands of an acquisitive conglomerate. The prospect of being taken over by a fellow glassmaker - albeit one from the Far East - may be more palatable to the local workforce, more so when one considers that NSG has had a technology sharing agreement with Pilkington since 1987, so the companies know each other well.

Synseal Advert

A combined NSG/Pilkington would seriously rival Asahi as the world's biggest glassmaker and is probably the only big move possible among the major glassmakers without upsetting the competition authorities. It will also provide some long awaited relief for thousands of Pilkington employees (and ex-employees) who have hung on to their shares in the hope of a recovery.

• More Breaking News: Veka, together with one of its oldest customers Piper Windows, has become the first window suite to achieve an A Classification in the BFRC ratings system (more about this below). It's been a busy week for Veka, having also confirmed that it is to return to Glassex next year with a massive 400m2 stand. Veka will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in the UK in 2006, as well as the 10th anniversary of Network Veka.
