A Busy Week, Learning and Networking

'European Openings'
doors and windows conference, organised by Chiltern Dynamics and BM TRADA Certification in London last week covered a number of significant topics, including prEN 14351-1:2005 covering windows and pedestrian doorsets without fire resistance.

When the standard is published, said Guy Bampton of the Building Division of ODPM, manufacturers will be able to CE mark their products. Although CE marking is not mandatory in the UK, he stressed, 'The CE mark will give a very strong message to Building Control that your product confirms with the Construction Product Directive, as it must.'

‘Annex ZA of prEN 14351-1, details mandated performance characteristics, including weathertightness and thermal resistance and, where appropriate performance for acoustics, safety devices, impact resistance (glazed doors) and operating forces. Manufacturers will also be able to test to a range of additional criteria if they choose, or as dictated by specifiers,’ said Vincent Kerrigan, Deputy Test Manager of Chiltern Dynamics.

All eyes turned to the UK's second city at the end of last week, with the Manchester Network Walk for charity enjoying a highly successful first outing on Friday. The atmosphere was terrific, with everybody clearly up for celebrating the end of the working week and putting their hands in their pockets for a good cause. Well done to all those who took part, or who donated money, and we look forward to seeing the pictures: the official snaps taken during the day will be available on this page later today, so if you want to download the picture of yourself posing with beautiful women or vomiting in a plant pot, then make a note of this url.

It was also the inaugural Glass Age Roadshow the day before, which had echoes of Mike Gray's Expo-Glaze exhibitions of the past, but saw over 20 exhibitors playing host to over 100 visitors in a room at Old Trafford. Hopefully we will report more on this at a future date and also provide details of future events. You never know, roadshows may be just the thing the industry needs!

Another diary date looming, although a less obvious marketing opportunity, is the Pearsons Glass Prize, which takes place on Tuesday 1st November 2005 in Covent Garden, London. I must admit this has crept up on us somewhat, as this is the first we have heard about it since its launch over a year ago, but it is a worthy event and I am sure will advance the cause of decorative glass no end. More about this here.

PROJECT OF THE WEEK

Stopray Glass by Glaverbel Used in the Two Tallest Apartment Blocks in the Netherlands
Over 8,000 m2 of Stopray glass was used in the Montevideo apartment complex in Rotterdam and over 6,000 m2 in the Westpoint apartment block in Tilburg. Glaverbel's Stopray glass combines a high light transmission rate with a low solar factor. It reflects heat from the sun during the summer and keeps warmth inside the building during the winter - an effect produced by applying a very thin, invisible, long-lasting metallic coating to the glass.
