2005 The 'Annus Horribilis'
According to Robert Palmer's latest report on the residential window, door and conservatory market, which will set you back over £5,500 if you want a copy, this year will be as bad as it gets, with some signs of recovery in 2006 and growth until 2009. The turning point, it seems, is still the conservatory market, which will exceed windows by sales value in 2006.

There are potential hazards along the way of course, which have been flagged up in Deceuninck's just published third quarter results. Hurricane Katrina and other localised shortages have already pushed raw material prices up to the point at which Deceuninck is looking at ways of passing the rises on to the market. Overall, though, Deceuninck has performed well, which shows the wisdom of being a global player: while the UK and Germany have underperformed, Turkey is up 70% and Eastern Europe 30%.

As we suggested in last week's Gl@zine, Vitrum 2005, which was held in Milan earlier this month, was one of the most successful for many years. Visitors were 23% up on 2003 (although visitor numbers were adversely affected by having to move the show to June in that year) and the 16,000 visitors this year comes close to the record numbers in 1997 (when 16,702 people came). Dates for Vitrum 2007 have also been announced - 3rd-6th October - which should offer some cheer to the organisers of GP&T, which is later in the following month (20th-22nd), thus avoiding the direct head-to-head which had been feared.
