A Fortnight is a Long Time in the Window Market
It happens every year: as soon as we set off on our annual holidays, there are cataclysmic changes in the glass and fenestration market which we have to report in a later than our usual weekly timescale. This year it was the sale of HW Systems to Latium, of course, although we should also mention the sale of Newdawn to Bowater, both events signal major changes in the market.

Not many people appear to have seen the Latium acquisition coming, perhaps sceptical about claims of the turnaround at HW, still unsure of the true cost of the pinking claims, and unconvinced of HW's saleability in what is essentially a buyers' market. It will be very interesting to see what Brian Kennedy makes of the five brands he has bought under the HW Systems banner: from past experience - eg Everest - we may expect to see some rationalisation followed by MBOs. Watch this space!

There has been plenty of other news of course: we particularly enjoyed hearing about MP Geoff Hoon's grilling by well known labour supporters (!) Nick and Gary Dutton over the proposal to include conservatories in Building Regs.

There is also some news about one of the window market's few bright spots, the vertical slider. LB Plastics has launched a VS which conforms to Part B, while one of the industry's better known faces, Danny Basden, has set up a new company manufacturing the Plastmo Charisma vertical slider. He could look happier about it though...

Last but not least, we have an interesting summary of a new report on the European Fenestration market from MRA, which argues that
'Europe is at the start of what promises to be its biggest growth phase ever, if you know where to look, and what to look for'.

Still Time To Enter The Pilkington Fantasy Football
The football season is now in full swing and already it is shaping up quite nicely. Who would have thought Charlton and Manchester City would be vying with Chelsea for that top spot?
More importantly the real action starts now. The first manager of the month will be awarded for September so there is still time to enter a team to put yourself in the frame to win a great prize.
Currently riding high is team ‘Fire, Fire, Fire, Fire, Fire, Fire’, which has amassed a colossal 224 points and is just edging out the team in second place which has 220. And it’ll come as no surprise to find that Chelsea’s millionaires are topping the points charts. But can you afford them? However, you could still pip them to the post for September’s manager of the month by entering a team of your own.
