Recycling
Emplas Window Systems Ltd, the UK trade and commercial fabricator, has been awarded a major supply and installation contract by Carmarthenshire County Council as part of a five year, multi million pound investment plan for the refurbishment of its council properties. Emplas, which also has access to a full UK-based PVC-u recycling facility, won the contract in part due to its ability to fulfil the Council’s stringent recycling objectives.

Time to Get Behind the UK's Only Glass Show?
Last week the spotlight fell on the only showcase for the UK glass industry as GP&T had its second outing at the NEC. The exhibitor representation was as good if not better than the launch show in 2003, while the visitor representation, sadly, was not. A disappointing 2266 (pre audit) glass professionals turned up to see the latest products, and technological developments in the glass business, a drop of over 1,500 from the previous event.

That said, as the organisers are keen to point out, the quality was good. Indeed, it is fair to say, the organiser ran a very good marketing campaign that in normal conditions, and perhaps in other industries, would have yielded a better response. One wonders, therefore, what it will take for an industry to get behind a show that has been specifically designed and launched for their benefit?

This week we have details of Ultraframe's interim results, which must be its worst results ever. However, an exceptional £2.9m worth of legal costs accounted for in this half should mean that the roofmaker should enjoy a better second half.

Ultraframe Posts Losses in First Half but Expects to be Back in Black in H2
Ultraframe Plc has announced its interim results for the 26 weeks ended 1 April 2005. Legal and restructuring costs coming in at a massive £3.6m for the period (which includes a £2.6m hit to cover the long running legal dispute with the Burnden Group/K2, which is expected to be concluded this month) and turnover in the UK down by 28% (with US sales slightly down after unfavourable exchange rates) have resulted in a post-exceptional losses of £6.2m. Gross margins are down from 51% to 40.8%.

Synseal Announces Record Increases in Sales
Synseal increased sales by £14m to £80m in the financial year to 31st March 2005. This is an increase of over 21% across the board, and conservatory sales are up 38%. ‘These figures would be good at any time – but in a difficult and demanding market,’ explains Malcolm Le Masurier, Synseal’s Managing Director, ‘these results are very pleasing.

Lister Trade Frames says that it is experiencing record sales this year and exceptional growth in the company's conservatory division. While many manufacturers around the country are reporting a fifteen to twenty percent drop in sales over last year, Listers has shattered all previous company sales records over the last three months with May showing a 25% uplift in sales over 2004.
