WELCOME
TO THE GL@ZINE @ GLASSEX: LAST DAY!
Visitor numbers up 7.6%
Visitor figures for Mondays show
were released yesterday, and showed a substantial increase in numbers year
on year. Initial calculations show that 6,751 people came to Glassex on
Monday, up 7.6% on Glassex 2001.
The quality of leads also improved, with the number of owners, partners,
chairmen, chief executives and managing directors up from 36% last year
to 38% this year. Glassex organiser Joanne Smith said: "Its been
very busy from the outset. Sunday was a great day in the aisles and its
got better ever since."
A Kömmerling spokesman said the systems company was particularly pleased
with the show so far. He said that on Sunday alone the company had taken
more leads than during the whole of Glassex 2001, and that the quality of
the leads had also improved. "Were thrilled with how things have
been going," he said.
Eurocell/HL Plastics has also enjoyed one of its best ever shows, with over
600 good leads in the first two days.
RITEC AUCTION
(see David Croxson strutting his stuff here)
The much-hyped auction proved a hugely popular event at the Ritec stand
yesterday, raising more than £5,000 for Changing Faces, the charity
that helps people living with disfigurements.
Three highly persuasive auctioneers helped the audience to spend more money
than theyd probably planned to part with: Paul Godwin of VAST PR,
Cliff Rankin of Rankins Glass and Ritec CEO David Croxson, who also successfully
bid for a widescreen television set donated by Glassex.
The most exciting bidding battle was for an England football shirt autographed
by the entire current team, which had been donated by K-Seal Glass. Bharat
Versani of Tough-Glaze, who also secured an autographed David James shirt
for £230, finally bought it.
There was another hard-fought battle for a trade advertising package worth
almost five thousand pounds including a five week spot in THE GL@ZINE,
which was clinched by Baljit Bassral of Bassra Machine Tools for £1,800.
Other lots included a trip for two to Paris, bought by Cliff Rankin for
£375, a Lucien Simon glass bowl, bought by PR company Austen, Harlow
Flitter, a glass champagne holder which was bought by another PR specialist
Lesley Hancock and a still life picture of some kiwi fruit, bought by Steve
Byers of Ritec.
This
is your last call to make it to Glassex, and
there will be a warm welcome (and cold Champagne) on stand C050, where I
and some colleagues will be happy to explain how The Gl@zine can help your
business.
I hope to see you later today.

Bassra Machine Tools clinched one of the biggest deals of the show yesterday,
after selling one of their automatic combined glass washing lines and
a range of related equipment to a large sealed unit manufacturer.
Managing director Baljit Bassral said the deal, worth more than £100,000,
was, one of the biggest single orders Bassra has had for an individual
company in the UK. "We had been talking to the client for about six
to eight weeks, but he decided he wanted to visit the show, see what else
was available and make up his mind here."
Bassra manufactures machinery for sealed unit producers ranging from small
set-ups to huge production lines. All the equipment is made in the companys
Birmingham factory, which was established by Baljit Bassral 20 years ago
with a £3,000 investment. Now the company sends its machines all
over the UK and has agents in 14 countries around the world including
Mauritius.
"Our machines do so well because we believe in keeping them simple,"
says Baljit Bassral. "They are not high-tec and full of unnecessary
gizmos, they are solid, uncomplicated and easy to install, plus they use
standard, off-the-shelf parts. It means that wherever they go in the world
we know people can maintain them easily."

GLASS BENEVOLENCE ASSOCIATION
A new charity, aimed at helping those in the glass industry who have set-backs
in their personal or professional lives, was announced yesterday by Ritec
CEO David Croxson, at the end of the Changing Faces auction. Provisionally
called the Glass Benevolence Association (GBA), the charity will also
work to improve the publics traditionally poor image of the double
glazing industry.
The charity was the idea of industry PR agency Austen, Harlow Flitter,
who are providing their services free of charge. Cliff Rankin of Rankins
Glass is to act as a special adviser, and the charity will operate under
the aegis of the GGF.
To kick-start the charity financially, Ritec pledged 10% of the auction
proceeds to the GBA, totalling £500, which was immediately matched
by the Glassex organisers EMAP.

YESTERDAYS
SEMINARS
Yesterdays well-attended seminar schedule covered a typically diverse
range of subjects, from secondary glazing in listed buildings to advice
on how to generate more valuable leads.
Paul Clifton from The Profit Shop outlined strategies on how to structure
a PVC-U business for maximum profit, while Matt Clements of the BPF outlined
the long-term sustainability of the PVC-U windows industry.
One of the most popular sessions, presented by gearing consultant Dr Robin
Kent, discussed how glass processing companies can increase their profits
by minimising waste and maximising efficiency. Dr Kent stressed that the
implementation of a systematic waste minimisation programme can typically
save a company one per cent of business turnover a substantial
sum that goes straight to the bottom line.
Waste, he stressed, is not just the contents of the companys skips
and bins. Its a big issue which also includes wasted raw materials,
wasted time, wasted utilities such as water, compressed air, electricity
and steam, rework costs, the costs of handling, storage, treating and
processing waste, and waste disposal costs.
Dr Kent said that instead of recycling waste, real savings are only achieved
by preventing it from occurring in the first place, and outlined a number
of simple techniques, requiring minimal financial investment, which can
have a dramatic effect on profits
