The deadline is looming for the end of current Government funding for solar photovoltaic (PV) installations. £2million in funds is forecast to be allocated in this final funding round. The closing date for applications is October 31st 2004. Previous rounds have already seen £15 million awarded to 134 different projects throughout the UK.

A Week Tinged with Sadness
It is with sadness that we heard this week of the death of Roger Castleman, chairman of Norman and Underwood and a direct descendant of one of the original company founders, John Underwood. He died last Monday after a long illness which he refused to allow to dampen his spirits to the end. We pay tribute to his life and his commitment to the glass industry and offer our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

With the 'Summer' reaching its peak with the wettest August on record, we were invited at the end of last week to a boat trip and picnic on the River Lee with nautical fanatics Steve and Karen Byers of Ritec (who first came to prominence in the marine market by applying Clear Shield to the 'magrodome' of the QEII). Amazingly, the weather held fair and a jolly good time was had by all in what was intended as a curtain raiser for the Ritec Boat at Glastec in Düsseldorf in November.

Finally, we learn this week of some movement within the trade media. Glass Age Editor Richard Schwarz is moving to pastures new after 20 years on the title. His leaving drinks are in central London on Wednesday 15th Septmber - you can download a PDF of the invitation here.

Meanwhile, Leah Tidy is moving from Emap's GP&T exhibition to Interbuild and is having leaving drinks in Croydon on Friday 10th September (at Tiger Tiger, from 5pm).
