There's
Life in the Window Industry Yet
One
can't help feeling that Jim Rawson, founder and owner of The Epwin Group,
will be much happier about paying this year's tax bill than the last
one, even though it will be substantially higher. In 2002, with pre-tax
profits of only £1.7m after some heavy re-financing costs, the
tax bill left the company with a deficit. For 2003, however, Epwin has
reported a retained profit of £7.3m on turnover up at £177m
(2002: £168m). With gross margins at 34%, Jim must be fairly nonchalant
about forking out £4.3m to the Revenue.

interesting development, meanwhile, is that the successful (?) Telephone
Preference Scheme aimed at eliminating cold calling is now being rolled
out to business, not just residential addresses.

achieved strong growth in 2003 despite the economic
cycle and the strong euro. Net sales grew by 68%
to EUR 198.4 (117.8) million. Operating profit before

(15.5) million. Glaston Technologies received a

$0.41 per diluted share, more than double the $151 million, or $0.17,
