Construction
The total volume of construction output in 2003 rose by four per cent compared to the previous year. Overall new work rose over the same period, despite a decrease in the infrastructure and private commercial sectors. Repair and maintenance rose, with increases in all sectors. Output in the fourth quarter of 2003 rose by two per cent compared to the third quarter of 2003 in volume terms and by three per cent in current prices.

Photovoltaics
January 9th, 2004 saw one of the world's largest solar power plants in Neustadt, Germany join the grid. A total of 2 megawatts of environmentally friendly electricity will be generated over an area of some 70,000 m2 (7 hectares) – corresponding to the size of seven soccer fields. This is enough to continuously power 700 households.

Knocking the Knockers!
Proving the point that there is nothing we like better in this country than building people up only to knock them down, this week it seems to be Pilkington's turn, whose annual 'trading statement' has been interpreted in many quarters as a full blown profits warning. It's actually not that bad, with the profits drop in Building Products worldwide being offset by good UK results and also a stong automotive performance.

GGF Fact Sheet explains Collision and Impact – Approved Document K
Glazing comes under Approved Document K under the heading of pedestrian guarding: it calls for guarding to be provided '….where it is reasonably necessary for safety to guard the edges of any part of a floor….', including at opening windows, and at glazing to changes in level (i.e. to provide containment). Any wall, parapet, balustrade or similar obstruction may serve as guarding. When placed in front of glazing, the guarding should be a minimum of 800mm high, whatever the building.
