In looking a bit closer at the story, however, it turns out to be the latest efforts of Trademark's MD Mark Ashwell to clean up the image of the double glazing industry, which he started several years ago by banning his company from cold calling.

Veka Advert
Mark has been active in this worthy, but seemingly fruitless endeavour since early 2000 and in the process has won a battle to register his firm's name as a Trademark and appeared on the BBC TV show Rogue Traders. More recently still, Mark commissioned a survey to ascertain the public perception of various industries trustworthiness. Rather unsurprisingly, double glazing salesmen come second from bottom with a 32% trust rating (beating only time share salemen).
Deceuninck Advert

However, in the same survey, journalists only managed fourth from bottom with 42% so you probably don't believe a word of this anyway...

Meanwhile, it looks like the glass industry is going to get its own Awards Event again, as I have - independently from The Gl@zine - negotiated an agreement with The Glass & Glazing Federation to stage an awards night to coincide with their annual conference. Enough companies have already pledged support to make this a going concern, and a few sponsorships are still available should anyone want to add their weight to what promises to be a key industry event.

Tony HigginFinally, we shall be spending part of this week up at the Interiors show at the NEC, particularly the KBB2004. Although mainly of interest to readers of our sister title The K&BZine, there is nonetheless a fair amount of glass content, as in kitchen surfaces and splashbacks, shower screens, glass furniture etc. Check out our coverage here.

Stars & Dogs: A Letter from Gary Dutton to the FT
I was interested to read two reviews of Ultraframe plc in the FT on 11th October and again on 6th December 2003. I would certainly endorse your rating of Ultraframe plc as a Dog rather than a Star, their UK market share has halved in the last 4 years, but I do take issue with the explanations for their lacklustre performance. As a matter of record and observation the UK conservatory market is anything but flat – it is booming
