Pilkington Fantasy Football 2008

Catch Me If You Can Couldn’t Be Caught

The dust has settled, the last kick has been taken, and the last click has been made – the Pilkington Fantasy Football League is over. And the team at the top after nine action packed months is Catch Me If You Can, who finish with 1637 points, ahead of second placed Rafas Great Goatie on 1625, and Wrath Rovers in third on 1618. In the league of leagues, it is The Firing Line who emerge victorious, with 1466 points, in second is Masterglass on 1438, followed by Cyril Isaacs Leeds The Way in third with 1428.

There was drama at both ends of the table on the final day of the 2007/08 Premier League season. With two relegation spots to be filled and the title to be decided, it really was a super Sunday and the heat was on.

Man Utd required a win against Wigan to become Premier League champions for the tenth time, and it was their star of the season, Cristiano Ronaldo, who set them on their way to victory with a penalty. The game ended 2-0 and Ronaldo finishes the season on an amazing 241 points and as the top scorer in the league.

Chelsea needed Man Utd not to beat Wigan to have a chance of winning the title, either that or Avram Grant’s men had to win by at least 18 goals. Unfortunately for the Blues, they didn’t even manage to win after Shevchenko’s strike was cancelled out by a late Kevin Davies goal. Will the draw dent Chelsea’s confidence for the Champions League showdown in Moscow? Chelsea’s top points scorer was Saloman Kalou, who finished the season on 132.

At the bottom of the table, three teams were battling to avoid the final two relegation places. In the end it was Fulham who pulled off the great escape with a 1-0 win over Portsmouth, meaning Reading’s 4-0 win against Derby and Birmingham’s 4-1 win against Blackburn were not enough to keep the Royals and the Blues in the top flight.

Between the drama at both ends of the table, the chase for European places still had to be settled. Everton secured UEFA Cup football for next season by beating Newcastle 3-1, with yet another goal from Joleon Lescott, who is not only Everton’s top points accumulator, but also the highest points scoring defender, with 152. Aston Villa will now have to enter the Intertoto Cup next season to win the right for a European tour after their 2-2 draw with West Ham.

The rest of the games had much less riding on them, but that didn’t stop Middlesbrough producing one of the results of the season, thrashing Manchester City 8-1. Stewart Downing bagged a brace for Boro to make him the fourth highest points scoring midfielder in the league. Could Gareth Southgate’s men be the surprise side of next season? Elsewhere, Arsenal beat Sunderland 1-0, while Liverpool beat Spurs 2-0.

Now the season has finished, it’s time to reflect on how well you have done. Are you the king of your mini league, or the fantasy league whipping boy? Whatever your position, remember Derby County’s motto for this season: it’s not the winning, but the taking part that counts.
