BM TRADA Launches Installer Scheme for Windows and Doors

BM TRADA Certification Ltd has launched a new third-party certification Q-Mark scheme, Survey and Installation of Windows and External Doorsets, to improve the quality and consistency of installation of windows and doorsets.

'Correct installation is essential to maintain all aspects of product performance, such as ease of operation, weathertightness, security or thermal performance, all of which can be reduced or negated through poor installation, even if the products have been manufactured and tested to a high standard. Our scheme responds to demand from installation companies for a means of enhancing the credibility of competent firms, by differentiating between certified and non-certified installers,' said Product Certification Manager Simon Beer.

Requirements of the new Q-Mark scheme include an initial audit at the company's headquarters, to verify the ordering process, and even more importantly an audit on site to ensure that installation is in line with all the relevant codes and procedures.

'The difference between a good and poor installation is in the detail. Our audit enables us to check that a high standard of workmanship and site practice is maintained throughout,' Mr Beer added. Thereafter, annual company audits will be reinforced by regular site audits for all members.

The company audit will pay particular attention to the training programme carried out by the installation company and will ensure that this is well documented.

The new Q-Mark scheme will apply to new build and replacement projects. For the latter, there is an additional requirement, a site survey carried out by the installation company prior to specification. 'These findings must be communicated clearly to the installer, so we have built into the scheme an audit of the survey process,' said Mr Beer. 'A poor survey may lead to incorrectly specified products, additional unplanned site work, lengthy re-work and ultimately customer dissatisfaction.'
