Laminated
Panels Make a Dramatic Divider for Bovey Castle's Bistro
Bovey Castle, a luxury hotel on the edge of Dartmoor
National Park in Devon and owned by Hilwood Resorts & Hotels, has
recently undergone extensive refurbishment of its restaurant and meeting
areas.
This
has included the creation of the Castle Bistro, which serves snacks, lunches
and dinners in a smart, but informal, atmosphere.
Daedalian Glass, working with Trevillion
Interiors has succeeded in bringing into the Bistro the atmosphere of
Dartmoor with its wild, wind-blown trees, using a new glass lamination
process with printed film inserts.
The dynamism of the finished project emphasises the quality textures and
materials used, whilst complementing the Bistro's ambience and its insistence
on a top quality food experience for its guests.
Davia Walmsley and Luke Price, two of Daedalian's designers have worked
closely on previous projects with Frances Blackham, design director at
Trevillion. Their ability to work on the same wavelength when it comes
to interpreting design concepts is evident from the laminated panels now
installed in the Bistro.
Starting with a verbal brief, the two looked at the various processes
available, taking account of costs in relation to budgetary constraints.
The understanding between the two companies is such that both appreciated
the time that needs to be put in to ensure the end result is absolutely
spot-on.
The idea of laminating printed film with organic inclusions between multi
layers of glass was developed by Daedalian for an art exhibition last
year. Building on that experience, Daedalian now has its own state-of-the-art
EVA laminating equipment.
With
EVA laminate, air is removed from between the glass whilst being heated.
Even if any inserts are not flat - they can be flowers, leaves, crumpled
fabric, or printed film as at Bovey Castle - as the air is removed the
heated EVA resin flows into and around the insert, completing the sealing
process.
At Bovey Castle, Daedalian used a very white, low iron glass. It works
incredibly well with the orange printed film inserts used. In this instance,
they are an orange that fades from dark to light , adding dramatically
to the slightly skeletal appearance of the trees.
The four laminated panels reach from floor to ceiling, making an eye-catching
partial room divider in the Castle Bistro.
With its own laminating kiln now installed, Daedalian is producing a range
of proprietary designs specifically adapted for lamination. The company
is able to use any Pantone or RAL colours, as well as fabric and mesh
inserts. Meanwhile, clients can also work with Daedalian to produce bespoke
designs, such as were used at Bovey Castle's Bistro.
