How
to Make Hardware Products Responsibly...
... by replanting a forest in Thailand, specifying re-cycled
plastic in China, and brass content reduction in India. These steps have
been taken by UAP, a leading supplier
of door furniture products in the UK.
As an environmentally responsible company all UAP imports including door
handles, knockers, letterplates, numerals, security viewers and cylinder
locks, have been re-specified to reflect growing concerns over diminishing
resources and carbon emissions during manufacture. One example is the
companys best-selling anti-vandal letterplates supplied to local
authorities and housing associations where the frames are now made from
100% re-cycled plastic thus saving on oil resources, the white inner cartons
in the packaging are no longer used and re-cycled shrink wrap substituted.
All UAP product packaging is recyclable as standard, and wherever possible
metals and coatings have been changed in order to improve longevity and
to make up for shortages due to increased world demand. Some of these
new materials are also more eco-friendly to produce by avoiding the mining
and foundry activities that not only create enormously damaging emissions
but are also a drain on existing energy resources, and blemish the earth.
The company offices in Bury, Lancashire are carbon neutral due to the
company's environmental policy which has included the installation of
photovoltaic cells to provide an independent source of energy.
According to UAP Managing Director David Jennings, It is said that
if everyone does a little bit, we can turn around the problems that future
generations will face. But we cannot afford to wait. Either for legislation,
or for others to start things off for us. With precious little margin
left for error we all have to take action now, each and every one of us
in whatever way we can.
